Explore Singapore’s rich history, from its early days as an ancient settlement to its rise as a modern city.
Discover how it transformed into a Crown Colony, endured war and occupation, and eventually became the
independent nation we know today.
Singapura (1299 — 1818)
Early tools found in Western Singapore and on Pulau Ubin suggest a settlement existed thousands of years
ago. By the 14th century, Singapore was a thriving trading port known by traders as Temasek. The port was linked
to the Malay Archipelago, Thailand, China, and India, possibly ruled by elites who lived on Fort Canning Hill.

Crown Colony (1819 — 1941)
In 1819, Sir Stamford Raffles and Major William Farquhar made a deal with local Malay leaders to establish a
British trading port. Singapore became a Crown Colony under British rule in 1867. By 1919, it had grown into a
modern city with electricity, telegraphs, and telephone connections.
Learn how historical figures shaped Singapore’s role as a trade hub, and explore the lives of early migrants.
Syonan-To (1942 — 1945)
During World War II, the British fortified Singapore but were defeated by the Japanese in 1942. The city was
renamed Syonan-To and suffered greatly under occupation, facing food shortages, violence, and disease. Japan’s
surrender in 1945 ended the occupation.
