It’s not secret ——our dependence on fossil fuels for energy has put an unbearable strain on

the environment. Alternative forms of energy, such as wind and solar power, are often either too

inefficient or too expensive to permanently replace conventional energy sources, such as coal and

oil.36 This has led to solutions that some might consider unbelievable.

Take the cactus (仙人掌) for example. Believe it or not, scientists have discovered that one

cactus, called nopal, can be transformed into clean, renewable energy. 37 The gas the rotting

cactus gives off can then power a generator that creates electricity. What’s more, nopal is cheap

and easy to grow, and the pulp (果肉) can be used as fertilizer, leaving no waste at all!

An even more common plant product that could be used as fuel is sugar. Researchers found

that by processing sugar with water and certain proteins, you can create hydrogen—— a major

alternative to gasoline. And sugar is easy to get. 38

39 The bioluminescent Aequorea victoria jellyfish, for instance, produces a protein that,

when applied to aluminum (铝) and exposed to UV light, generates a tiny amount of power. While

it might not produce enough power to make a difference to the environment, it could still help heal

people by powering microscopic devices used in advanced medicine. If the technology advances

far enough, it could perhaps be used on a larger scale in the future.

Just as the Aequorea victoria jellyfish produces a useful protein, human beings, too, produce

something that can be used as a power source —— body heat! When lots of people gather

together in a mall or on a subway, all that body heat adds up and can be converted into power for

homes and offices. 40 Some selected buildings in London, Stockholm and Paris are running on

people power.

the reason is simple: the chances are against us. To explain, imagine that you are in a store where

length, Erlang came up with formulas to determine the best number of operators that should be on

duty at any given time. 38 On top of that, his work established the basis for queuing theory,

which became a new branch of mathematics.

The theories first invented by Erlang are still used today in a variety of commercial settings,

including call centers and traffic engineering. 39 While there are many options available

regarding lining up, it appears that a snaking-line approach—where people stand in a single line

and wait for the next available clerk—is the most efficient. 40 Research shows that this option

is about three times faster than using separate lines, which is the approach that is most commonly

used but not that efficient for anyone in a rush.
