Last summer holiday, Aunt Emily took us to a safari park, not far from Liverpool.
I was very happy to go as I had never been to a safari park before. It’s a very interesting park, full of wild
animals running freely.
When we got there, we bought our tickets and drove into the park. We were very excited at the thought of
going to see the lions. But to get to the lions’ place we had to go through the monkeys’ land first. And that was an
unforgettable experience because they climbed all over the car, ate apples and bananas, and threw all kinds of
things at us. They seemed very unfriendly.
Anyway, we went on our way to the lions’ place where we had to lock ourselves in the car as we knew lions
could be dangerous. A lion came up very close to us. Then it was on the bonnet( ). It looked calm but we felt
terrified. Aunt Emily, who isn’t very brave, started to call for help. The kids started crying. Only my brother,

Until a few weeks ago, Asians were the only mask wearers in Western countries, causing even unfriendly
responses from the Westerners. But this taboo( 禁 忌 ) is falling apart fast after more and more evidences from
experiments say that the practice in effect in protecting human beings from infectious diseases. Now, an increasing
number of Western countries, including Italy, France, the United States and Australia, have finally decided to
recommend their citizens to wear masks in public places to protect one another from the deadly COVID-19 viruses.
For Western nations: the simple change is really difficult and the debate over the face mask has even
developed into a larger discussion over the role of the individual in society. In the West, mask-wearing was seen
through an individual’s perspective. It runs like “I am free to decide whether to wear a mask to protect myself or
not”. However, in Asia, mask-wearing was seen through a social perspective. It runs like “If all individuals wear
masks, the society will be protected”. The logics are fundamentally different and the change would require a big
cultural adjustment because mask wearing in public places was even considered “strange and frightening” to the
Westerners.
But mask-wearing in public places was also new to the Asians until it was struck by SARS in 2003. After that,
mask-wearing has become such a part of daily life that it now plays a role in giving the public a sense of being
“protected” in Asia.
“I’m convinced that pretty soon everyone in a Western family will have two or three reusable face masks,”
said Jean Francois Mattéi president of France’s National Academy of Medicine.

B. Westerners usually love prettier face masks.
C. Westerners really care about the environment.
D. Westerners tend to base their decision on evidence.
31. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?

I heard many parents complaining that their teenage children are rebelling( ). I wish it were so. At your
age you ought to be growing away from your parents. You should be learning to stand on your own feet. But take a
good look at the present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are taking the same way of showing that they disagree
with their parents. Instead of striking out boldly on their own, most of them are clutching at one another’s hands for
reassurance.
They claim they want to dress as they please. But they all wear the same clothes. Then set off in new
directions in music. But somehow they all end up with listening to the same record together. Their reason for
thinking or acting in thus-and-such a way is that many people are doing it. They have come out of their cocoon into
a larger cocoon.
It has become harder and harder for a teenager to stand up against the popularity wave and go his or her own
way. Industry has firmly carved out a teenage market. These days every teenager can learn from the advertisements
what a teenager should have and be.
And many of today’s parents have come to award high marks for the popularity of their children. All this adds
to a great barrier for the teenager who wants to find his or her own path.
But the barrier is worth climbing over. The path is worth following. You may want to listen to classical music
instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is collecting records. You may have
some thoughts that you don’t care to share with your classmates at once, well, go to it. Find yourself. Popularity
will come with the people who respect you for who you are. That is the only kind of popularity that really counts.
32. In this passage, who does the author wants to tell?
A. teenagers how to learn to decide things for themselves.
B. readers how to be popular with people around.
C. parents how to control and guide their children.
D. people how to understand and respect each other.
33. Many teenagers think they are brave enough to act on their own, but actually most of them _____________.
A. lack confidence
B. are much afraid of getting lost
C. dare not deal with problems single-handed
D. have much difficulty understanding each other
34. What does the author think of advertisements?
A. Convincing. B. Influential. C. Advanced. D. Amazing.
35. During the teenage years, what should one learn to do?
A. Find one’s real self.
B. Differ from others in as many ways as possible.
C. Get into the right reason and become popular.
D. Rebel against parents and the popularity wave.
