preparations,sheputsthefishspecimeninabottleof70% alcoholand30% ofwater.“Forlongterm

storage,70% alcoholseemstobethatmagicnumber,”Maslenikovsaid.“There’senoughwaterto

helpthespecimenholditsshape,andenoughalcoholtopreventthegrowthofmicroorganisms.”

Alcoholatevenhigherconcentrations,forinstance95% ethanol（乙醇）,worksasadehydrant

（脱水剂）,meaningitremovesandreplacesthewaterinthecell,tissueorwhole-bodyspecimen

withalcohol.ThistechniqueisacommonwayofpreservingDNA.

Itcanbetrickytodecidewhatpercentageofalcoholtouse.Usingtoomuchortoolittlecan

affectthesample’sshapeandflexibility,orevenloweritsabilitytopreservethesample.High
