Mary Lyon was a leader in women's education in the nineteenth century. It was a time when
women's education was not considered important in the United States. States did require each town to
provide a school for children, but there were not enough teachers. Most young women were not able
to continue their education. If they did, they often were not taught much except the French language,
how to sew clothing, and music.
Mary Lyon felt that women's education was extremely important. She believed women were
teachers both in the home and in the classroom. Mary opened a school for young women in the village
of Buckland. She suggested new ways of teaching, including holding discussion groups for students.
Then, Mary began to raise money for her dream school for the higher education of women. This
school would own its own property, guided by an independent group of directors. Its finances would
be the responsibility of the directors. It would not depend on any one person to continue. And, the
students would share in cleaning and cooking to keep costs down. In 1837, Mary Lyon opened Mount
Holyoke Seminary for Women. In 1893, 44 years after her death, under a state law, Mount Holyoke
Female Seminary became the first college to offer women the same kind of education as men.
Mary's efforts led to the spread of higher education for women in the United States. Her influence
lasted as the many students from her schools went out to teach others.
4.What was American women's problem with education in the 19th century?
A.Teachers were careless about teaching. B.They had no chance to continue their education.
C.The government paid no attention to education. D.They had few choices about the subjects.
5.What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A.Mary thought little of women's education.
B.Mary preferred women to be educated at home.
C.Mary attached importance to women's education.
D.Group discussions were not held in Mary's school.
6.What was Mary's dream school like?
A.It would have very strict rules. B.It would be independent in finance.
C.It would be owned by the government. D.It would depend on some important person.
7.Why is Mary still remembered by Americans?
A.She set up the first college. B.She made women equal to men.
C.She helped to pass American education law. D.She improved American women's education.

With the development of our society, cell phones have become a common part in our lives. Have
you ever run into a careless cell phone user on the street? Maybe they were busy talking, texting or
checking updates on We Chat without looking at what was going on around them. As the number of
this new "species" of human has kept rising, they have been given a new name—phubbers (低头族).
Recently a cartoon created by students from China Central Academy of Fine Arts put this group
of people under the spotlight. In the short film, phubbers with various social identities ( ) bury
themselves in their phones. A doctor plays with his cell phone while letting his patient die, a pretty
woman takes a selfie (自拍) in front of a car accident site, and a father loses his child without knowing
about it while using his mobile phone. A chain of similar events finally leads to the destruction ( 毁灭)
of the world.
Although the ending of the film sounds unrealistic, the damage phubbing can bring is real. Your
health is the first to bear the effect and result of it. "Always bending your head to check your cell
phone could damage your neck," Guangming Daily quoted doctors' words. "The neck is like a rope
that breaks after long-term stretching." Also, staring at cell phones for a long time will damage your
eyesight gradually, according to the report.
But that's not all. Being a phubber could also damage your social skills and drive you away from
your friends and family. When getting together with family or friends, many people prefer to play
their cell phones while others are chatting happily with each other and this creates a strange
atmosphere, Qilu Evening News reported.
It can also cost your life. There have been lots of reports on phubbers who fell to their death,
suffered accidents, and were robbed of their cell phones in broad daylight.
8.Why does the author give the example of a cartoon in Paragraph 2?
A. To tell people of the bad effects of phubbing.
B. To call for people to go walking without phones.
C. To suggest phubbers will destroy the world.
D. To advise students to create more cartoons like this.
9.According to the passage, what risks may a phubber have?
Destructing the world Affecting his social skills
Damaging his neck and eyesight Getting separated from his friends and family
A. ①②④ B. ②③④ C. ①③④ D. ①②③④
10.What's the author's attitude towards phubbing?
A. Supportive B. Confident C. Disapproving D. Optimistic
11.What will be talked about in the following paragraph?
A.Ways to avoid the risks of phubbing B. Bad effects of phudding
C. Daily life of phubbers D. Methods of phubbing
D
The 3D-printing industry is accelerating its efforts to help fight the new coronavirus and the
disease it causes, COVID-19.
On Tuesday, HP announced it’s working with those who bought its 3D printers to make medical
face shields, hands-free door openers and an adjuster for face masks for medical staff who often must
wear them for hours. It’s also testing “hospital-grade” face masks meeting the higher-end FFP3 (
式 面 罩 ) standard and parts for simple emergency ventilators ( 呼 吸 机 ) and it’s looking into nasal
swabs to test for COVID-19 infection. HP also is offering free downloads of its 3D-printed medical
equipment designs.
Carbon, whose 3D printers are used to make everything from bicycle seats to teeth straighteners,
said it plans to send face shield designs to its network of customers who’ve bought its 3D printers.
Carbon co-founder and Executive Chairman Joseph DeSimone said on Monday the company expects
to send the designs by early Tuesday.
3D-printer makers typically sell their products to others that actually do the 3D printing. One
such customer, Ford, said Tuesday that it’s made 1,000 face shields and shipped them to Michigan
hospitals, with plans to make 100,000 face shields a week. It is also working with 3M and General
Electric on respirator masks and ventilator designs.
The effort is one of several to apply 3D-printing technology to the fight against coronavirus. 3D
printing isn’t as fast at churning out products as conventional mass production methods. But 3D
printers are flexible and able to make many different parts anywhere there’s a printer and raw
materials like the plastic resins Carbon printers use.
Some 3D-printing efforts have focused on ventilators, which expected to be in short supply with
a surge of COVID-19 patients suffering from respiratory ( 呼吸器官) problems. Also in short supply
are N95 masks that can be useful in reducing the likelihood a wearer will spread COVID-19 to others.
Carbon’s DeSimone is cautious about the enthusiasm, though, saying that regulatory approval is
important and that 3D-printer enthusiasts shouldn’t be making components not intended for close
human contact that might release unhealthy gases.
12.What is the passage mainly about?
A.An introduction about 3D-printing. B.The 3D-printing industry’s efforts to help fight COVID-19.
C.The products that 3D-printing makers sell. D.How 3D-printing makers produce medical equipment.
13.HP announced to help its customers to make the following products except for________.
A.medical face shields B.hands-free door openers
C.an adjuster for face masks D.emergency ventilators
14.Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.Carbon’s company will finish its design after Tuesday.
B.Ford has made 1,000 face shields and plans to make 10,000 more in a week.
C.3D printers are more flexible than traditional mass production methods.
D.Most 3D-printings focus on making ventilators and N95 because of their short supply.
15.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.DeSimone is cautious about 3D-printing.
B.3D-printing may release unhealthy gases.
C.Carbon’s company didn’t gain regulatory approval of making medical equipment.
D.3D printers aren’t enthusiastic about making components designed for close human contact.
