Once upon a time, there lived a very wise farmer who could grow very good corn. Each year he would take
part in the state farmer’s fair (展览会) and win a top award for his corn. He became famous and attracted the
villagers nearby to visit his farm. And big companies came to buy his corn as well.
The story of the farmer reached the ears of a reporter. Curious about the secret of his success, the reporter
came to interview him. While he was learning about the farmer’s growing skills, he found that the farmer shared his
best quality seeds (种子) with his neighbors.
“How can you afford to share your best corn seeds with your neighbors when some of them might go to the
fair as well?” the reporter asked.
“Why wouldn’t I?” the farmer replied. “The wind picks up pollen (花粉) from the corn and moves it from
field to field. If my neighbors grow poor quality corn, cross pollination (授粉) will finally damage the quality of
my corn too. If I am to grow high quality corn, I must help my neighbors grow good corn too.”
The farmer’s answer made the reporter understand connections in life.

Do you think robots could pass an eighth-grade test? Guess what they can!
The artificial (人工的) intelligence (AI) system Aristo recently passed the same eighth-grade science test that
some US students take, The New York Times reported. Aristo correctly answered 90 percent of the questions on the
test. This is an example of the progress that is being made in AI development. Four years ago, 700 computer
scientists tried to develop AI systems that could pass these kinds of exams. None scored higher than 60 percent.
Scientists at the Allen Institute in the US developed the system. Aristo was able to pass the exam because it
can not only understand language, but also use logical (逻辑的) thinking to solve difficult problems. For example,
it can understand what a forest fire is and how it could affect animals.
The system used BERT, a kind of neural (神经的) network technology developed by Google, to answer the
questions. BERT has “read” thousands of articles and can understand English. If it looks at a sentence with a
missing word, it can correctly guess what the word is. With BERT’s help, Aristo “read” many multiple-choice (多
选的) questions. Over time, it was able to find logical patterns.
Aristo’s success means that we might see new AI-based products, such as search engines and data bases for
hospitals. AI systems might be able to better understand users in the future.
