Ethiopian food has always been special to my family. As third-generation Ethiopian Americans, my parents
have very few ties left to the cultures that they originally came from, so they tried to come up with their own
traditions. After my sisters and I were born, we were fed tibs and injera and they quickly became our favorite
foods. Tibs is a spicy beef dish with tomato and berbere (a traditional Ethiopian spice). It often includes a
hardboiled ( 煮得老) egg which my sisters and I fought for.
When I'd just moved to New York from Colorado, I met my future best friend for the first time. I was feeling
very insecure in my new setting, and I noticed he was eating injera. I talked with him about it, and that
conversation led to our close friendship.
Even during times when my family were very busy, we would all get together on Sundays and make a big
Ethiopian meal for dinner. I remember when I was ill in hospital, my dad went out and picked up tibs for everyone,
so it would be waiting for us when we got back from the hospital. It has been a marker of almost every major life
event I have had so far.
I feel ashamed to admit that I know about ethnic communities in Atlanta through the availability and variety
of food around where I live. When we lived in New York my family would make a two-hour drive to the nearest
Ethiopian restaurant around once a month. When I got to Atlanta I found that there were at least three different
Ethiopian restaurants within walking distance of my apartment. We have tried maybe six or seven Ethiopian
restaurants in Atlanta now. Every time we eat Ethiopian foods, they always take us back to our cultural roots (),
giving us the taste of home.
24. Why did the author's parents create their own traditions?
A. To introduce Ethiopian foods to the US. B. To set an example for Ethiopian Americans.
C. To give up some too old Ethiopian traditions. D. To reconnect their family with Ethiopian culture.
25. What brought the author and his best friend together?
A. Their chat about injera. B. Their memory of Colorado.
C. Their fear of new environments. D. Their interest in cooking dinners.
26. Why did the authors dad prepare tibs for the whole family?
A. To help them relax after a busy day. B. To reduce their homesickness.
C. To bring them some relief. D. To show his cooking skills.
27. What does the author mention at the end of the text?
