One emergency evacuation drill
In order to enhance the security awareness of our students, and teach them what to do when a
fire or an emergency happens, our school organized a fire evacuation drill this morning.
At half past nine o'clock am, we heard the alarm. Instructed by some teachers in charge, we
rushed to the appointed areas in order. Afterwards, we followed the messages on the air to head for
the safe place. On arriving at the playground, we stood in line. Our headmaster made a summary,
attaching great importance to safety.
Not only did the drill increase our knowledge of protecting ourselves in the face of
emergencies, a fire in particular, but also provided a precious opportunity to deal with them.

A moment later, the entertainment director ran back to us. She asked us why we didn’t finish
the show as promised. We told her how embarrassed we felt when we played in front of complete
silence. We also expressed our concern that they must dislike us. “What are you talking about?”
asked the director, “I’ve been talking to them. They love you so much.” It turned out that they just
didn‘t know they were supposed to clap. Or they simply couldn’t’t do so due to severe physical or
mental disabilities. All of us stared at her in disbelief, and we decided to keep our word and finish
the show.
Returning to the stage, we played our final three songs. Finally, with the show over, we began
packing up our instruments. We had still received no applause. However, as we were to leave, at
least fifty people crowded onto the stage. All of them wanted to thank us; some shook our hands,
and some surrounded us with a wide grin. Several told us that we were the best band that had played
for them in years. We couldn't believe it. We never felt as good as we did that one special night.

W: What are you going to do?
M: I’m looking in the newspaper for a job.

W: No, I don’t play any card games. But I know how to play chess. How about you, George?
M: Well, I happen to be one of the best chess players around.
W: OK. Let’s play, then. We’ll see who’s the best.

M: Hi, can I see Dr Dave urgently? My friend has been run over by a car at the crossroad outside.
He is bleeding heavily and needs immediate medical attention.
W: I am afraid Dr Dave is busy in the operation theatre at the moment, but you can take your friend
to Accident & Emergency Department. He will be taken care of there.

W: What can I do for you today?
M: I need to mail this package to New York, please.
W: OK, let’s see how much it weighs … it’s about five pounds. If you send it express, it will get
there tomorrow. Or you can send it priority, and it will arrive by Saturday.
M: Saturday is fine. How much will that be?
W: $11.35. Do you need anything else?
M: Oh, yeah! I almost forgot. I need a book of stamps, too.
W: OK, your total comes to $20.35.
