Welcome to “Cash Poor Points Rich”, a new travel blog dedicated to sharing experiences
with credit card points and miles to help you get big travel but for small spend. With the right
planning and maximization of available resources, traveling as a college student may be easier
than you think.
Chengdu, China
If visiting a place with happy locals is a priority for you, there’s no better city to hit than
Chengdu. It is home to pandas and spicy things. Moreover, the city’s abundance of cultural and
historical sights, together with its laid-back lifestyle, make itself one of the most attractive and
livable large cities too. Past travelers have spent, on average,¥158 on meals and about a quarter
of that on local transportation for one day.
Con Dao Island, Vietnam
Tourism is picking up in Vietnam lately, where you can travel for about ¥100 per day if
you play your cards right. Con Dao Island Nation Park, a group of dramatic tiny islands off the
southern coast, is a great destination to see sea turtles and other wildlife while exploring the area
on foot. Its thick jungle will give you a good chance to uncover a paradise of your own.
Zakynthos Island, Greece
If you’re looking for an affordable European summer beach vacation, consider Zakynthos
Island. Food is cheap and mouthwatering. There are plenty of free things to do, although the
favorite is spending time on the beautiful beaches edged by electric blue water. There are
countless options for swimming in the appealing sea, along with charming villages and museums
to explore.
New Orleans, U. S.
New Orleans is an incredibly unique place in the U.S., full of fascinating history, absorbing
culture, delicious food, and a constantly buzzing nightlife scene. There are actually a couple of
hostels in and near the French Quarter that offer reasonable accommodation rates for students.

I don’t think I can recall a time when I wasn’t aware of the beauty of the ocean. Growing
up in Australia, I had the good fortune of having the sea at my side. The first time I went to
Halfmoon Bay, I suddenly had the feeling of not being able to feel the ground with my feet
anymore.
For my 10th birthday, my sister and I were taken out to the Great Barrier Reef. There were
fish in different colors, caves and layers of coral (珊瑚). They made such an impression on me.
When I learned that only one percent of Australia’s Coral Sea was protected, I was shocked.
Australian marine ( 海洋的) life is particularly important because the reefs ( 暗礁) have more
marine species than any other country on earth. But sadly, only 45% of the world’s reefs are
considered healthy.
This statistic is depressing, so it’s important for us to do everything to protect them. The
hope that the Coral Sea remains a complete ecosystem has led me to take action. I’ve become
involved with the Protect Our Coral Sea activity, which aims to create the largest marine park in
the world. It would serve as a place where the ocean’s species will all have a safe place forever.
Together, Angus and I created a little video and we hope it will inspire people to be part of
the movement. Angus also shares many beautiful childhood memories of the ocean as a young
boy, who grew up sailing, admiring the beauty of the ocean, and trying to find the secrets of
ocean species.
24. What can we learn about the author from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1?
A. He seldom went sailing at the sea.
B. He forgot his experiences about the ocean.
C. He never went back to his hometown.
D. He had a wonderful impression of Halfmoon Bay.
25. What is Australian marine life like according to the second paragraph?
A. It is escaping from the Coral Sea gradually.
B. It depends on reefs for living greatly.
C. It may be faced with danger.
D. It is protected better than that in other oceans.
26. What is the aim of the Protect Our Coral Sea activity?
A. To contribute to a complete ecosystem.
B. To prevent more marine species being endangered.
C. To set up a large nature reserve for reefs.
D. To raise more teenagers’ environmental awareness.
27. Why do Angus and the author create a little video?
A. To ask more people to take action to protect the marine species.
B. To inspire more people to study the secret of the ocean.
C. To share their childhood experiences about the ocean.
D. To bring back to people their memory of ocean species.
C
While some critics claim that history curricula (课程) teach unnecessary content, others
argue that these curricula need to be more comprehensive. Despite ongoing debates about
content, one universal truth remains: strong history curricula are necessary for developing the
productive citizens of tomorrow.
The greatest academic value that history curricula provide is not the recall of important
dates and names. Rather, understanding the historical inquiry process is the most important
component. This process teaches students how to become critical thinkers and understand the
dynamic nature of the telling of history.
Through strong history curricula, students are shown both a variety of primary and
secondary sources and are taught to critique them. This is where the historical inquiry process
begins. Students not only begin to analyze and ask questions about the content, but they also
learn about the author’s credibility and potential bias ( 偏 见 ). Students are then able to
contextualize the information they learn and can think more critically about historical context
and those who tell it.
With this framework, students can then understand the causal relationship between human
nature, values, philosophy, actions, and their consequences. It teaches students to recognize
recurrent themes and lessons that are necessary to understand modern society. Most importantly,
it teaches students to develop a healthy skepticism (怀疑论) when presented with information
today because our actions are history in the making.
Forty years ago, renowned scholar James Fitzgerald argued that no education is complete
without the teaching of historical inquiry. He believed that the only way to move forward in life
is to understand what’s behind us.
Today, this principle still holds true. Students take both the factual knowledge and the
historical inquiry skills they learn in the classroom and apply them to real world circumstances.
Throughout their lives, students who are taught with strong history curricula will take the
lessons they learn from our predecessors and become involved, active, productive citizens who
want to create a history that tomorrow’s students will be proud to learn about.
28. What is the biggest academic significance of history learning?
A. Passing down Chinese culture. B. Grasping historical inquiry skills.
C. Making people more knowledgeable. D. Enriching people’s everyday life.
29. What does the underlined word “critique” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Protect. B. Combine. C. Comment. D. Remember.
30. Why is James Fitzgerald mentioned in the passage?
A. To stress the importance of history.
B. To point out the essence of education.
C. To indicate famous people learn from history.
D. To show history contributes to people’s achievements.
31. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. It Is the People that Create History
B. History Pushes the Wheel of the Times
C. History Curricula Are Gaining More Attention
D. History Curricula Shape Tomorrow’s Decision Makers

The release of GPT-4, the latest language model developed by OpenAI, has raised concerns
about its potential impact on the job market. In the finance industry, fears around AI disruption
are particularly severe, as many jobs involve the processing of data that could easily be done
by machines.
This has prompted questions about what it means for the CFA Institute, which offers
chartered financial analyst qualifications to humans who pay a considerable fee to take the
exams. If an AI algorithm (算法) can pass the CFA exam, it could threaten the CFA Institute's
revenue (收入) model and potentially affect several hundred thousand bank employees.
