George Schaller is a biologist. He spends most of his life travelling in the wild to study unique wild animals,
including the Bengal tiger, the East African lion, the Tibetan antelope, and the panda.
Schaller’s first experience abroad was said to be in Africa in 1959, to study the mountain gorilla (大猩猩)
there. After that, he never stopped studying wild animals. Even when he was 82, he still continued his research: he
went to South America to study wild species (物种).
But Schaller said he had spent more time in China than in any other country and that he loved working in
China. After his book The Giant Pandas of Wolong came out years ago, he left the study of the species to some
Chinese scientists. Yet he returned to Changtang, Guangxi year after year to study other wild species there.
When Schaller studied wild animals, he also tried to call on people to protect these species. “Few lawmakers
or members of the public read scientific papers or care about them,” he pointed out. So besides writing scientific
papers and putting forward proposals to governments, he also tried to present his findings to the public by means
of popular science books. The public also responded to the suffering of large and lovely wild animals. “That, in
turn, provides protection for all the other species and the habitats (栖息地) in that area,” he said. And he’s glad to
find the population of mountain gorillas has recovered and that China has created many national parks to protect
animals like pandas.
“As far as I’m concerned, the value of my effort lies in leaving behind young biologists who have worked
with me and I will continue training the young,” Schaller said. “I get cheered up all the time. I have seen the
progress.”
