One Sunday, the local newspaper showed a picture of the family who suffered the typhoon hardest and gave

their clothing sizes. I thought this would be a good chance to teach my children to help people in need.

I showed the picture and told their difficulty to my seven-year-old twins, Brad and Brett, and to three-year-

old Meghan. “These poor people are now in need of help,” I said. “We’ll share what we have with them.” Then I

gently on top of the other toys.

“Oh, honey,” I said, “You don’t have to give Lucy to them. You love her so much.” Meghan nodded seriously

and said, “Lucy makes me happy, mum. Maybe she’ll make that little girl happy, too.”

The boys watched, open-mouthed. Without a word, Brad rose and went to his room. He came back carrying

his favorite comic book. He looked over at Meghan and placed it in the box next to Lucy. A smile spread across

Brett’s face. Then he jumped up and ran to get some of his prized Matchbox cars.

I pulled all of them into my arms. Then I took my old jacket out from the box of clothes and replaced( 替换)

it with my new green jacket. I hoped the young woman in the picture would love it as much as I did.
