Passage 12021·浙江绍兴市·九年级期末)

Japan is a nation that look up to silence and good manners.Yet, when it comes to eating noodles,Japanese
people can be the loudest in the world.
According to a lifestyle website, slurping(发出啧啧声)when eating noodles encouraged in Japanese
culture. It's believed that taking air into your mouth can improve the taste of the noodles and help cool down the
food. It's also considered to be a way to show appreciation for the dish. Sometimes, just making the noise alone
seems to make the noodles more enjoyable.
It was not until a new expression —"noodle harassment(骚扰)"— came out online that Japanese people
started to notice the problem. They found that the slurping noise was making some foreign visitors uncomfortable.
Months ago, Japanese instant noodle(方便面)maker Nissin introduced a so-called noise-canceling fork.
The fork looks like an electric toothbrush. It is connected to a mobile phone. When the person using the fork starts
to slurp, the fork will send a sign to the person's phone. Then the phone will play: sound to cover the slurping noise.
But is it really necessary? Dining traditions and table manners do be different. In India, people eat with their
hands. They think they build a connection with the food in this way. However, people who are used to eating with
forks might find it unacceptable to get their hands covered in oil or sauce. But this eating method is part of India's
culture, just like Japan's slurping is part of its own.
"So,if you are eating noodles, please slurp,"wrote a Japanese food blogger."If anyone gets annoyed while you
are doing that, pay no attention to them. They're missing the point totally."

Passage 22021·北京门头沟区·九年级期末)
Betty was familiar with Hopelink's Carnation food bank, but that didn't make it easier for her to take that first
step inside when she found herself needing help a few years ago.
"I sat out in the car for a long time before I finally went in," Betty says. "But I knew I had to do it."
Betty and her husband lived together happily. When her husband passed away in 2008, everything changed.
Soon, Betty realized she needed to ask for help.
"When Dave was still alive, I never thought it would happen," she says. "I never really thought I would have
to go to a food bank. I thought I'd be able to keep my job longer, and I thought we'd have more money to save."
Things didn't work out that way. And finally, Betty found herself in need of help, sitting in her car outside
Hopelink, working up the courage to take that first step.
Once inside, she felt welcome immediately.
"A dear lady – I think she was a volunteer – came up to me, and whether she saw that I was scared … I think
so; I feel that way," Betty says. "And she said, 'you know, there's a lot of us that have to come here.' And I went into
the food bank, and it was wonderful. I learned there were other people having a hard time … it wasn't just me."
