第一课时 Welcome to the unit
1. You' d better get some tools.
had better (= 'd better) 最好 had better (not) do sth.
Had sb. better do sth. ?
Eg. You' d better hurry, or you'll miss the train.
He has better go home right now. (F) had better 无人称和数的变化
It's better to do sth.★
2. -What's DIY exactly, Suzy? -It stands for “do-it-yourself”
exactly adv.① 确切地,精确地
Eg. That's exact what 1 mean. (F) That's exactly what I mean. (TV)
exactly adv. (答语)正是,没错
Eg. -So she wants to sell the house and move to London? -Exactly.
-那么说她是要把房子卖掉搬到伦敦去? -对。
Not exactly. (用于纠正某人说过的话) 并非如此;不完全这样。
Eg. -And you refused? -Well, not exactly. I couldn't say yes.
-那么你拒绝了? -嗯,不完全是, 但是我没法答应。
stand for ② 代表;象征 Eg. What do the letters N. B. stand for? 这两个字母 NB 代表什么?
3. When you do DIY, you make, repair or decorate things yourself instead of paying someone to do it.
instead of① 而不是,代替
instead of sth. /sb. /doing sth.
instead adv. 反而,却 (多用于句首或句末)
Eg. Mike was ill, so I went, instead. 迈克生病了,所以换了我去。
= Mike was ill, so I went instead of him.
pay vi.&t.② 付费
(pay-pays /paying/ paid-paid)
pay sb. Money Eg. pay me ten yuan 付给我十块钱
pay money for sth. Eg. pay ten yuan for the ruler 花十块钱买把尺子
pay for sth. Eg. pay for your meal 买单 = pay the bill
pay sb. to do sth. Eg. pay him to clean the house 花钱请他打扫房子
I pay much money for my education. = I spend much money on my education.
(注意这两个句子中的介词与动词的固定搭配)
第二课时 Reading I
1. He once tried to put in a brighter light in his bedroom, but he made a mistake.
once adv.① 曾经,一度 (常用过去时) Eg. There was once a shoe factory here.
adv. 一次 Eg. We have a reading week once a term.
once 一次 twice 两次 three times /four times/ ten times
put in② 安装
带有 put 的常用短语:
put out 扑灭 put on 穿上 put up 搭建,张贴,举起 put up a shelf / put up a picture / put up your hand
Put all your eggs in one basketball. ★ 孤注一掷
mistake n.③ 错误,失误 Eg. make the same mistake 犯相同的错误
make fewer mistakes 少犯错误 make a little mistake 犯个小错误
vt.误以为 mistake A for B 把A误以为 B

2. Another time, he wanted to put up a picture on his bedroom wall, but he hit a pipe and filled the room with
water.
hit vt. ① 撞,击中 (hit-hit-hi/ hitting)
fill vt. ② 使充满 fill... with... 用...填充... Eg. fill the hole with earth 用泥土把洞填起来
be filled with... = be full of... 充满,装满 Eg. The world is full of/ is filled with love. 世界充满爱。
3. Now the living room has not only blue walls but also a blue ceiling and floor.
not only... but also... 不仅... 而且... (就近原则)
Eg. Not only she but also I am wrong. = Both she and I are wrong. 不仅是她连我都错了。
Eg. My Chinese teacher is kind not only to you but also to me.
4. I am reading all the books myself and attending lessons every Saturday.
attend vt. & vi.经常去,出席
Eg. attend the meeting 出席会议 Please let me know if you don't attend.如果你不参加,请通知我。
She attended college last year. = She went to college last year. = She entered the college last year.
第三课时 Reading II
1. He then spent five hours putting up the shelf on the wall.
It took Suzy's cousin only a few minutes to put up the shelf on the wall.
shelf n. ① 架子,搁板 (pl. shelves)
spend vt. ② 花费(时间或金钱) ( spend-spent-spent)
sb. spend time on / doing sth = It takes sb some time to do sth 花时间做某事
spend time sp.在某地度过多少时间 spend time with sb.与某人度过多少时间
only a few③ 仅仅一些 (肯定意思,修饰复数名词)
only a little 仅仅一点儿 (肯定意思,修饰不可数名词)
2. They couldn't stay there because one end of the shelf was much higher than the other.
much higher① 高得多
much/even/ far 常修饰比较级 very, quite, rather, too, so, much too, far too 常修饰原级
the other (② 两者中的)另一个
the other day 前几天 Eg. He asked about you the other day. 前几天他问起你了。
another pron. & adj.③ 另一，又一 (后接单数名词或数字+复数名词)
Eg. another day 另一天; another ten minutes 再十分钟,又十分钟
●other adj. other +名词复数; Eg. other countries (没有范围)
●others pron.其后不需要接名词,相当于 other +名词复数(没有范围)
●the/your/名词所有格+ other +名词单/复数(有范围)
两个中的另一个 Eg. I am looking for my other shoe. I wear only one now.
●the others 相当于名词复数; (有范围)
●some..., the others... 一些....其余的... (有范围)
●some..., others... 一些...还有一些.....(无范围)
3. I bought some books about DIY for him and 1 also advised him to take a course in DIY.
buy sth. for sb. = buy sb. sth. ① 为某人买某物
advise vt. & vi. ② 建议,忠告,劝告
advise sb. (not) to do sth. 建议某人(不要) 做某事
advice un. 建议,忠告,劝告
some advice 一些建议 a piece of advice 一条建议
ask for advice 寻求建议 give advice on sth.给出关于...的建议
take a course in sth. = attend a course in sth. ③ 参加一个...的课程 pass / fail a course
