1. skip vt. 不做（应做的事情等）；跳过 vi. 蹦蹦跳跳地走；略过

不吃饭 skip meals 跳绳 skip rope

2. faint

adj. 快要昏厥的；微弱的；可能性不大的

微弱的光 a faint light 淡淡一笑 a faint smile

她的病还有一点点希望可以治愈。 There is still a faint hope that she may be cured.

vi. 昏厥

饿昏过去 faint from hunger

→ adv. faintly 微弱地；模糊地；虚弱地 n. faintness 模糊；微弱；衰弱

3. immediately

adv. 立即，马上

她几乎立刻就回答了。 She answered almost immediately.

conj. 一…就

她刚走开我就想起了她的名字。 Immediately she'd gone, I remembered her name.

4. concentrate vi. & vt. 集中（注意力、思想等）；全神贯注

吵闹声不绝于耳，我无法集中于工作。

I can't concentrate on my work with that noise going on.

我决定全力以赴找个住的地方。

I decided to concentrate all my efforts on finding somewhere to live.

5. extreme

adj. 极端的；严重的

只有在极端情况下才会让孩子离开父母。

Children will be removed from their parents only in extreme circumstances.

n. 极端不同的感情（或境况、行为方式等）

他以前很害羞，现在却走向了另一个极端。

He used to be very shy, but now he's gone to the opposite extreme.

6. concerned adj. 担心的，忧虑的；关注的，关切的

担心，担忧 be concerned about/for sth./that...

她担心自己会错过转弯的地方而迷路。

She was concerned that she might miss the turning and get lost.

关于，对...感兴趣 be concerned with sth.

她对会议上提到的克隆技术感兴趣。

She is concerned with the technology of clone referred at the meeting.

7. effect n. 效果，作用；影响

副作用 side effect

这些建议即将付诸实施。 The recommendations will soon be put into effect.

= The recommendations will soon come into effect.

= The recommendations will soon take effect.

→ adj. effective 有效的；实在的；给人深刻印象的 v. affect 影响；使感染；假装

8. prove

vt. 证明，证实

只要给我个机会，我会证明给你看。 Just give me a chance and I'll prove it to you.

linking v. 后来被证明是系动词无进行、无被动。

这条理论后来被证明是正确的。 This theory proves to be true.

9. diet

n. 节食；日常饮食

健康和均衡的饮食 a healthy and balanced diet

我决定在休假前节食。 I decided to go on a diet before my holiday.

vi. 节食，进行规定饮食

她总是在节食，但体重好像并未减少。

She's always dieting but she never seems to lose any weight.

10. nutrition n. 营养

→adj. nutritional 营养的；滋养的 n. nutritionist 营养学家

11. function

vi. 起作用，正常工作，运转

许多孩子大班上课时学习效果不好。 Many children can't function effectively in large

classes.

这沙发还可当床用。 The sofa can also function as a bed.

n. 作用，功能，职能

发挥功能 fulfill/perform a function

12. energetic adj. 精力充沛的，充满活力的

13. effective adj. 有效的；生效的

14. get into shape 强身健体

get sth into shape 把 ... 条理化

15. frightened adj. 害怕的，惊吓的，受惊的

我害怕在黑夜单独走路回家。 I'm frightened of walking/to walk home alone in the dark.

I'd never do that. I'd be frightened to death . 我绝不会干。我会吓死的。

16. rather adv.相反，而是；相当；更准确地说

She would rather die than lose the children.

17. aspect n. 方面，层面

18. pressure n.心理压力，紧张；压力；要求，催促
