(四十一)

Dogs like living with people. They are very friendly. They can do many

things for people. Some dogs help people to look after sheep, other dogs

help them to find the lost children. And some of the dogs can help the

blind (盲人), they are the Seeing Eye Dogs.

Now we can see this kind of dogs all over the world. They work for the

blind.

The Seeing Eye dog is strong and easy to train (训练). He helps the blind

to walk from place to place. Before a dog becomes a Seeing Eye dog, it

must go to a training school for about three months. First the dog has to

learn to sit or stay when he hears the trainer's call. In his next lesson the

dog learns to take his trainer across busy streets. The dog has many things

to learn. At the end of the training school he must take tests (测试). When

it passes the test, it can become the Seeing Eye dog.

The new master may be a man, a woman, or even a child. It takes the dog

and his blind master about a month to learn to work and live together.

"Let's go to the petting zoo (抚爱式动物园)!" said Bonk.

"First, let's get some food for the animals," said Lurk.

"I'm so happy we can feed the animals," said Uzzle.

"I'll get carrots for the horses," said Lurk.

"I'll get cabbages for the chickens," said Uzzle.

"I'll get corn (玉米) for the sheep," said Bonk.

At the zoo, Bonk put some of the corn in his bag. His bag had a

small hole (洞), but Bonk didn't know about it. Bonk and his friends

played with the animals and fed them. Bonk forgot about the corn.

On the way home, the corn dropped (落下) out. One of the sheep at the

zoo followed the corn to Bonk's home. Before Bonk and his friends said

goodbye to each other, they saw the sheep.

"How do we get him back to the zoo?" asked Bonk.

Bonk and his friends did everything. But the sheep just didn't move.

"Mr Sheep," said Lurk. "You need to go back to the zoo." The sheep

didn't move.

"I know what will work!" said Bonk. Bonk put the corn along the road to

the petting zoo and let the sheep eat it. The sheep moved when he ate the

corn. At last, the sheep was back at the zoo.

"Baa!" said the sheep.

"You're welcome," said Bonk.

Bill likes fish very much. He often buys fish in the shop and takes it

So when Bill comes home in the evening, the fish is not there, and his

wife always says, "Oh, your cat eats it." And she gives Bill some bread

for supper. Bill gets very angry (生气的). He takes his wife and the cat to

the shop near his house and weighs (称重) the cat. Then he turns to his

wife and says, "My fish weighs one kilo. This cat weighs one kilo too.

Sharks

There are almost 400 different kinds of sharks, and they can be found in

all four oceans of the world.

Each kind of sharks looks different. Some are longer than a school bus,

while others are so small that they can live in fish bowls. Sharks come in

all kinds of colours. Most of the time, their colours help them fit in with

their surroundings（环境）.

Sharks have many rows of teeth, rather than just one row like man. The

teeth from the outside row gradually fall out, and the teeth from the next

row take their place. Some sharks will lose 30, 000 teeth in a lifetime!

Different types of sharks have different kinds of teeth. This is because

different sharks eat different kinds of food. Some sharks eat food as small

as plankton（浮游生物）while other sharks eat animals as big as sea

turtles. Most sharks do not eat very often. Some sharks will go for weeks

between meals. Sharks are at the top of the ocean food chain. That is to

say no animals can hunt them for food.

One of the most special things about sharks is that they have been around

for a long time. Sharks have lived in the sea for about 64 million years!

And scientists believe they have not changed much since then. How

amazing it is!
