These days, people with serious heart problems can have a heart
transplant—in other words, another heart is put into their body to replace
the heart with problems.
Christiaan Barnard was the surgeon (外科医生) who performed the
first human heart transplant operation. Barnard was born in 1922, in his
native South Africa. He studied medicine at the University of Cape Town
and graduated in 1953. Then he went to the USA and studied at the
University of Minnesota. He returned to the University of Cape Town in
1958 to teach surgery. No one knew very much about him - but in 1967,
he became world-famous.
On 3 December, Barnard transferred the heart of a 25-year-old woman
into the body of Louis Washkansky, a 55-year-old grocer. Unfortunately,
Washkansky died 18 days later. Barnard did a second transplant, on 2
January 1968, for a man called Philip Blaiberg—this was a lot more
successful, as Blaiberg lived for over 18 months after the operation.
Barnard was not the usual picture of a surgeon. Young and handsome,
he spent as much time in nightclubs as he did in operation rooms. He met
the Pope (教皇) in Rome and President Lyndon Johnson in the USA. He
knew many beautiful film stars of the time, but all three of his marriages
failed. He also performed free surgery on hundreds of very sick people.
He died in September 2001, aged 78.

One morning, Mrs. Santos was returning from the supermarket with her
neighbor and her daughter, two-year-old Carmelita. They stopped on the
stairway of their building at their fifth-floor flats. The neighbour opened
her door first, and little Carmelita ran past her. Carmelita knew the flat
well, because she had visited many times. The neighbor put down her
keys and shopping bags, and turned back a moment to Mrs. Santos.
2
At that moment, there was a sudden gust of wind (一阵突如其来的强
) and the door slammed shut. Carmelita was inside, alone.
Then the neighbor remembered that she had left her kitchen window
open. She and Mrs. Santos rushed to the Santos' flat and telephoned the
police. But there was no time to get help in opening the neighbouring flat.
They could see that Carmelita was already leaning out of the kitchen
window. She had climbed onto a chair, and soon she was climbing out
onto the window sill (窗台板). Mrs. Santos called Carmelita to go back
inside. But the little girl did not understand the danger and only waved to
her mother.
Then she lost her balance and her feet slipped off the window sill. She
held on for a while with her hands, but she began to be afraid. Her mother
cried for help, and Carmelita was crying, too.
And then she could hold on no longer. Several people had run out into the
street on hearing all the screaming. They saw the child hanging onto the
window sill and got ready to catch her. Down she fell, five long stories—
and landed safe and sound in the arms of three strong men.
"I never thought we'd do it," said one of the three men afterwards. "But I
kept thinking, if we don't catch her, she'll die and it'll be on my
conscience (良知, 内疚) all my life."
