According to news website Quartz, we are now living in a “throw-away society”. Single-use
has become a natural way of life and can be seen almost everywhere.
What do we usually throw away?
We throw away many things after using only once, such as paper cups and old
newspapers. Things are more than that. Every day, we see new stories and internet slang ( 网络俚
语) on social media. With so many of them coming out all the time, the life of each becomes short
– they become “single-use online products”. Now it doesn’t take too much time and energy to
communicate with each other anymore. So we even have single-use friendships.
What caused the “throw-away society”?
Social media is one of reasons for this. Many people like to check what friends or other
people are doing on WeChat, Sina Weibo or Facebook. They keep scrolling (滚屏) and there is too
much information. Since 2017, WeChat Moments has allowed users to make only the last three
days of their posts viewable. 这让人们不用想太多就可以分享。
Is this way of life good or bad?
A single-use way of life may give you
quick pleasure. But without any deep thought
behind it, the pleasure may not last for long. It
only keeps us coming back for more. Maybe
we need to slow down and enjoy a more thoughtful way of life.

How to say "thanks" with style
At times, you need to say thanks for a cool CD, for a favor from a friend, or a wonderful party.
So it is polite and kind to write a thank-you note.
Here are some tips on how to do it:
Use a pen, or a nice card. A ballpoint is also OK. But save the exercise book paper for
schoolwork.
Write as if you were talking to the person. Sometimes, when we’re trying to sound
polite, we sound unnatural（不自然的）.

Get it in the mail today. It ’ s never too late to say thanks, but writing quickly is more
polite.
Now you know the basic rules, you can start writing a thank-you note:
Step 1: Greeting. "Dear" is often used. "Hi" is also OK.
Step 2: First thank-you. A short sentence that thanks the giver, such as "Thanks for
the great birthday gift."
Step 3: The details（细节）. Describe the gift, explaining what makes it special.
A few sentences will do.
Step 4: Second thank-you. A sentence that says thanks again.
Step 5: Close and signature（签名）. Say "with love", or "with best regards". Then
sign your name.
