Can't-miss attractions along the China-Laos railway: China section
The China-Laos railway, an over-1,000-kilometer-long cross-border railway connecting the
city of Kunming in Southwest China's Yunnan province with the capital of Laos, Vientiane, is set to
be inaugurated in December, which will link destinations worthy of a visit along the way. Check out
some of the can't-miss destinations along the Chinese section of the railway.
Fuxian Lake in Yuxi
Just 30 minutes from Kunming, the city of Yuxi is home to Fuxian Lake, China's largest deep-
water lake sitting on a plateau. Famous Chinese travel writer Xu Xiake 1587-1641once paid a
visit and wrote about its pristine water; What makes the lake more mysterious is the possibility that
an ancient city lived under its quiet and calm surface.
Sun-River National Park in Pu'er
The word "Pu'er" may remind many of the renowned tea from Yunnan Province, but it is also
the name of a city. Not surprisingly, it is one of the country's major Pu'er tea producing areas. Back
in ancient China, the region served as an important stop along the Tea Horse Road, a trade route
linking Yunnan and Southwest China's Tibet autonomous region.
Wild Elephant Valley in Xishuangbanna
A group of wandering Asian elephants in Yunnan grabbed headlines this year when it set off
on a rare 500-kilometer trek from Xishuangbanna, a major habitat for wild elephants in China. For
those wishing to interact with the giant creatures themselves, the Wild Elephant Valley is a must-
visit.

Few people knew about online food delivery apps ten years ago, but today, many would find it
hard to live without them. In China alone, over 400 million people use such apps. For better or for
worse, online food delivery services have changed the way we eat, and they are also having a huge
impact on our society.
These services have no doubt brought us many benefits. They provide jobs for millions of
people and help restaurants find more customers. Since the apps are very convenient, they also
benefit consumers: we can now have meals delivered at any time of day, despite bad weather or
busy schedules. This is especially important for people who work long hours, since they might not
have time to cook. Not only do these apps save time, they also provide us with a wide variety of
restaurants to choose from. They have proved to be useful for retired people as well: seniors who
live far away from restaurants and supermarkets can now get hold of meals and groceries more
easily.
However, we must not forget the drawbacks of online food delivery services. For one thing,
they make it even easier to order unhealthy food, high in sugar, fat and salt. Food safety is another
problem: it can be hard to establish where the food actually comes from, and whether the owner is
legally permitted to run a restaurant. As couriers need to deliver the orders as quickly as possible,
some pay little regard to traffic rules. In recent years, there have been a number of terrible traffic
accidents because of this. Moreover, the industry is creating unbelievable amounts of packaging
waste: over a million tons of online food delivery boxes are thrown away every year. Experts
assume that this number will continue to grow in the future, and this will have a negative impact on
the environment.

With bright lights on the floor and walls, loud electronic music, and a red shuttlecock flying
around, this Malaysian badminton court seems like the set of a science fiction movie. “Shuttle In
The Dark” is a place to play badminton in the famous Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur. It
was set up in late 2021 by a company that wanted people to take up the sport after two years of
restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Badminton is one of the most popular sports in Malaysia and Asia. The Southeast Asian
country has produced some of the world's top-ranked players. Irina Inozemtseva is Director of Inic
Sport Management. She said the goal was to "gain back the interest of people to come back and
play. She added that the group wanted to draw in not only expert players but also “new people
who were not able to or never played badminton before.” The futuristic court presents a new
difficulty for players. They have to adjust their eyes to the darkness to play, said Lee Yan Sheng, a
professional badminton coach.
Professional player Ho Yen Mei used the term focus - meaning to carefully direct attention - to
describe the requirements of playing on the court, "With the lighting, somehow we are still able to
hit it and then it requires better focus. And it's exciting, it's different but ifs still like playing normal
badminton/ she said. Open to players of all levels, Shuttle in the Dark charges S42. 63 per hour to
use the courts and rent their equipment, A regular public court charges about $4. 50.
8. What is the purpose of setting the badminton court?
A. To make science fiction movie. B. To test out some new technologies.
C. To regain people' s interest in the sport. D. To fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
9. What can we learn from the passage?
A. There are some world-famous badminton players in Malaysia.
