II. Grammar and Vocabulary Section A
Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passages coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a
given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.
Video Games Fostering Creative Freedom Benefits Creativity
Video games that foster creative freedom can increase creativity under certain conditions, according to new research from Iowa State
University. The experimental study compared the effect of playing Mine-craft (《我的世界》:当个创世神),with or (21) instruction,
to watching a TV show or playing a race car video game. Those (22) (give) the freedom to play Minecraft without instruction were most
creative.
"It's not just that Mine-craft can help induce creativity. There seems to be something about choosing to do (23) also matters," said
Dougless Gentile, a professor of psychology.
(24) you are not familiar with the game, Gentile says Mine-craft is like a virtual Lego world. The game, which has sold more than
100 million copies, allows players to explore unique worlds and create anything they can imagine. Study participants randomly assigned to
play Minecraft (25) (split) into two groups. The one receiving instruction was told to play as creatively as possible.
After 40 minutes of play or watching TV, the 352 participants completed several creativity tasks. (26) (measure) creative
production, they were asked to draw a creature from a world much different than Earth. More human-like creatures scored low for creativity
and those less human-like scored high. Surprisingly, those instructed to be creative while playing Mine-craft were the least creative.
Gentile says there's no clear explanation for this finding. In the paper published by Creativity Research Journal, he, Jorge Blanco-
Herrera, lead author and former master's student in psychology; and Jeffrey Rokkum, former Ph. D. student in psychology, outlined possible
reasons (27) the instructed Mine-craft group scored lower. Blanco-Herrera says the instructions may (28) (change) subjects
motivation for play.
"(29) (tell) to be creative may have actually limited their options while playing, resulting in a less creative experience," Blanco-
Herrera said. " It's also possible they used all their 'creative juices' while playing and had nothing left (30) it came time to complete the
test.”

New Path to Plastics
A crucial component could come from existing carbon sources. Ethylene ( 乙 烯 )is the world's most popular industrial chemical.
Consumers and industry demand 150 million tons every year, and most of it goes into countless plastic products, from electronics to textiles.
To get ethylene, energy companies crack hydrocarbons (碳氢化合物)from natural gas in a process that requires a lot of heat and energy,
(31) to climate change - causing emissions.
Scientists recently made ethylene by combining carbon dioxide gas, water and organic molecules (分子)on the surface of a copper
catalyst (催化剂)inside an electrolyzer - a device that uses electricity to drive a chemical reaction. The (32) , described last November
online in Nature, could point the way toward using carbon dioxide as feed-stock for chemicals and potentially fuels, helping to reduce (33)on
fossil fuels and to put a dent in industrial carbon emission.
The discovery grows out of work published last year by University of Toronto engineer Ted Sargent, describing a similar process that
used more electricity and was less (34) overall. So Sargent says he (35) out researchers at the California Institute of Technology who are
"black belts in molecular design and synthesis."
Caltech chemists Jonas Peters and Theodor Agapie and their colleagues experimented with organic molecules to add to the copper
catalyst. An arylpyridinum salt turned out to be the Goldilocks molecule, Sargent says it formed a water-insoluble (不溶于水的)film (薄
膜 )on the copper that (36) the carbon dioxide so its molecules reacted most efficiently with one another, without slowing down the
reaction. The result was more ethylene, with fewer by-products such as methane (甲烷)and hydrogen.
Still, the process must become even more efficient before it can be commercially (37) and use carbon scrubbed or captured from
facilities such as coal-or gas -burning power plants. Lower energy costs, already (38) with renewable energy sources such as wind, could
also help make it more (39)________________.
"This is a(n) (40) breakthrough," says Randy Cortright, a senior research advisesr at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in
Golden, Colo., who was not involved in the study. This result, he says, is "something that a lot of people are going to pay attention to, and
they're going to be able to build on."
Ill. Reading Comprehensions
Section A
Directions: For each blank in the following passage, there arc four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word
or phrase that best fits the context.
The closer one studies the gig economy (灰色经济),the less fun it sounds. Those who make their living this way, generally _41_ app-
based platforms that match consumer needs with workers who can fulfil them are _42_ being in uncertain employment.
Bodies such as the International Labor Organization characterize this kind of employment as mostly low paid and _43_, in which
workers enjoy very few social, organizational and _44_ rights and protections.
Attention is turning to the health and well-being of this fast-growing workforce, which _45_ about 1.3m in the U. K. One academic is
even calling for a "Gig-hall" study - similar to the landmark Whitehall _46_ into the health of civil servants.
Those studies, conducted over three decades by Sir Michael Marmot, demonstrated the _47_ between socio-economic status and health,
a correlation that became known as "status syndrome". Senior civil servants enjoyed lower _48_ of death and heart disease than lowlier
employees, a difference partly ascribed to (把…归功于…)autonomy (自主权)at work.
The _49_ of powerlessness that afflicts (折磨;使痛苦)many in the gig economy- according to one survey, only four out of 10 gig
workers (零工)feel like they are their own
_50_ - suggests that health problems may be brewing in this sizeable slice of workforce.
One study on the Italian workforce, published last year in Social Science and Medicine, suggests that those on _51_ contracts are more
likely to use prescription medication for mental health conditions such as _52_ (although the reverse is also likely to be true, that pre-existing
ill health leads to more irregular employment).
53 not specifically about the gig economy, the authors, from the universities of Brunel and Milan, conclude that the _54_ to make
labour markets more flexible might prove ill for the psychological well-being of workers.
Gig work is often conducted privately, in cars and homes, from bicycles and motorbikes, instead of from a _55_ workplace, so basic
hazards, such as fatigue associated with long hours, can go unnoticed.

Section B
Directions: Read the following two passage. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there
are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
(A)
People always regret asking me and my wife how we got together. It's a long story, involving other relationships and several countries,
and to be honest, it's not that interesting, so I'll spare you the details. We were at a restaurant in Tuscany on our summer holiday last year
though, when we met another English couple who had a far more interesting story than us. Lynn and Andy had actually met online before
they got together, or at least they thought they had. After a few casual conversations through an online dating agency, they decided to meet
for real. Lynn arrived at the restaurant first, and shortly after was approached by Andy, who thought she was someone else. It turns out they'd
both arranged to meet different people, but liked the look of each other, and that was that!
And they're not alone. It seems there are all sorts of places you might meet that special someone. Lukas met Sofie for the first time
when he crashed into her car - on his bicycle. 'It was raining and I was coming downhill really fast, so 1 couldn't really see where I was
going. Sofie opened her car door and I went straight into it, and off my bike,' explains Lukas. 'I was unconscious for a few seconds, and
when I came round there was this beautiful young woman asking me "Are you OK?" Well, after that, she went to the hospital with me and
was just really kind, really caring, and we hit it off.”
Every cloud has a silver lining, so they say, and Nick McKiddie would most likely agree. He was leaving the office late one night when
he got robbed by a group of young men. He wasn't hurt, but they stole his phone and wallet, so he called the police. Susan Harris, a young
police officer at the time, attended the call. Nick explains, 'I don't know whether I was in shock because of what had happened, but I think it
was love at first sight. I would never usually be so confident, but I just asked if she wanted to go for a drink sometime, and to my suiprise,
she said yes!, Nick and Susan got married last December.
Animals don't have the same social inhibitions (抑制; 顾虑)as humans do, and this was certainly the case when Ri took her dog,
Ben, to the local dog park. 'As soon as 1 took his head off, he ran straight to another dog on the other side of the park, and started getting
very friendly indeed, 'she laughs. 'I actually had to pull him away, and that was when I met Ben, the other dog's owner. We had a good laugh
about it all, especially when we realised he had the same name as my dog. We became friends after that, and well, the rest is history.'
56. According to the passage, Lynn and Andy .
A. first met in a restaurant in Tuscany
B. regretted talking to each other online.
C. were arranged to see other people at first.
D. preferred casual conversations to real meeting
57. got to know each other due to an accident.
A. The author and his wife B. Lukas and Sofia
C. Nick and Susan D. Ri and Ben
58. By “every could has a silver lining" (in paragraph 3), the author means that .
A. every day is good beginning
B. good luck comes with misfortunes
C. what you value matters in your life
D. people do not always behave as usual
59. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The methods of joining animals and us.
B. The places where people get together.
C. The weird ways people meet.
D. The special cases of dating.
(B)
Anytime you have more than two lines to choose from, odds are you will not pick the fastest one. What to do? Plan Ahead.
■ At the grocery store: Favor stores that use a "serpentine line” - that is, a single long line that flows into multiple cash registers (e.g., the line
at your local bank). Many Trader Joe's and Whole Foods stores use this system, proved to be at least three times faster.
■ At airport security: Wait times tend to double every Friday afternoon from four to eight, but if you are a frequent traveler who cannot avoid
rush hour, consider investing S100 in Global
Entry. This U. S. Customs and Border Protection service makes you eligible for the TSA Pre- Cheek line and allows you to skip the
customs desk during international travel. Visit cbp.gov to apply.
