Mr. Reece was a farmer.He and his wiferew a lot of things. They worked very hard. One day,

Mr. Reece said to his wife, “let’s go to the city next Sunday. We can have a good lunch there, and

His wife was very happy when she heard this, because she and her husband always ate a lot .

She didn’t like cooking three times a day.

They went to the city by train the next Sunday. They walked about for an hour. When it was

In order to know a foreign language thoroughly (完全地)，four things are necessary. First，we

must understand the language when we hear it spoken.Secondly ，we must be able to speak it

ourselves，correctly with confidence and without hesitation (犹豫).Thirdly，we must read in the

language as much as possible. Besides ，we must be able to write it.We must be able to make

sentences that are correct in grammar.

There is no short way to succeed in language learning.A good memory is a great help，but it is

not enough only to memorize the rules from a grammar book.It is no much use learning by heart

long lists of words and their meanings，studying the dictionary，and so on.We must learn by using

the language. If we are pleased with a few rules we have memorized，we are not really learning the

language. We must “learn through use”.Practice is the most important when we want to learn a

foreign language .We must practise speaking and writing the language whenever we can.

You speak, write a letter, and make a telephone call. Your words carry a message. People

communicate (交际) with words. But do you think you can communicate without words? A smile on

your face shows you are happy and friendly. Tears in your eyes tell others that you are sad. When

you raise your hand in class, the teacher knows you want to say something or ask questions. You

shake your head, and people know you are saying “No. ” You nod (点头) , and people know you are

saying “Yes. ” Other things can also carry message. For example, a sign (标志) at the bus helps you

know which bus to take. A sign on the door tells you where to go in or out. Have you ever noticed

that a lot of signs around you and that you receive messages from them all the time?

People can communicate in many other ways. An artist can use his drawing to tell about

beautiful mountains, about the blue sea and many other things. Books are written to tell about all the

wonderful things in the world and also about people and their ideas.

Books, magazines, TV, radio and films all help us communicate with others. They all help us to

know what is going on in the world and what other people are thinking about.
