It was a mid-winter's day. My Mom had ordered me and my two brothers outside so she
could get a little housework done.
My brothers were seven and five years older than me and much bigger as well. Still, it was
I who decided to start the snowball fight. I hit one of them when they weren't looking and soon
we were all making and throwing snowballs as fast as we could. Being little helped me avoid
the first dozen or so snowballs that came my way until the one that caught me in the back of
the head and sent me sliding into the two foot deep snowdrift. I felt two hands grasp my
shoulders as my oldest brother lifted me out safely. I laughed as I dusted the snow off.
Later Mom called us back inside for a lunch of hot, chicken soup. I drank it slowly and
then sat near the old, wood stove in our living room and let the warmth quickly dry my damp
socks and jeans. It felt so nice. I couldn't describe the feeling back then but I know now that it
was pure happiness.
In those innocent days of childhood there was no regret for the past or worry for the
future. Each moment could be enjoyed just the way God intended. Each day could be filled
with fun, laughter, and love. I think that we all need to re- experience that feeling in our lives.
We need to live with childlike joy while keeping our adult wisdom. We need to throw a few
snowballs and drink a few bowls of soup afterwards. We need to trust in our Heavenly
Father's love for us and share our love with others as well. Life here is too brief not to enjoy all
of its precious moments.

Since the mid 1950s，life expectancy around the world has increased greatly, and many
scientists believe that this trend is likely to continue in the future.
The United Nations figured that in the early 1950s the world life expectancy rate was 46.4
years. By 1998 ，world life expectancy had increased to 63 years. In more developed
regions，life expectancy was an average of 75 and in less developed areas it was 62 years.
The main reason for the increase during this period was the decrease in infant death
rate．This was mainly because of improved health care and better food production.
Most experts believe that people will continue to live longer in the future because of
medical advances. Researchers predict that at least half of the North American and Japanese
babies born since the year 2000 will live to an age of 90. Besides ，new drugs are being
developed which will slow down the ageing process.
If the present older populations in many countries become healthier, wealthier and live
longer，the trend will have important results for people and governments. The cost of medical
care for older people will rise，and governments will have to start thinking hard about how to
provide money for state pensions (养老金) for older citizens. Some people will want to keep on
working later in their life ，which could lead to changes in the age of retirement ．Others
would prefer to
retire early to enjoy having more time for themselves. This will create business opportunities
for companies in the leisure (休闲) and entertainment industries and open up new sections of
the market.
Finally，the effect on the world population will be great. Europe’s population has been on
the decrease for several years now as people prefer to have fewer children and families tend to
be smaller. However, the population won’t decrease as fast once these anti- ageing drugs start
to become widely available. It’s believed that the populations in China and India could rise by
500 million. An expert on population，Professor Shripad Tuljapurkar，says that “We could
expect to see the world’s population top out at about 11 to 12 billion.”
