What if your parents are too busy to cook dinner, so they give you a bag of candy…?
That’s exactly what some parents did in the 1920s in America. Back then, stores sold more
kinds of candy than they do now. Most people thought it was as good for them as a healthy dinner.
Many scientists also thought candy was good for people’s health.
Now, of course, we know that sugar isn’t good for us. But could it really be that bad if it
tastes so delicious? Sadly, yes.
“Everyone loves sugar,” says Dr. Robert Lusting, a sugar expert. “But sugar has a dark side.”
Take breakfast, for example. Sugary cereal (谷类植物) gives you energy, but only for a short time.
Then you start to feel sleepy. Foods like oatmcal (麦片) and fruit give your body energy for hours.
And eating a lot of sugar can cause health problems, including serious illnesses. These days, more
and more children are getting illnesses caused by eating too much sugar.
The good news is that changing your diet can help—and fast. Lusting recently did a study
that helped overweight children eat less sugar. All of the children who cut out sugar had fewer
health problems in just 10 days.
Knowing the risks of eating too much sugar can help you make healthy food choices. Does
this mean you have to give up sugar completely? No. It just means you should make sure you are
eating plenty of healthy foods, like fresh fruit and vegetables. Most of us can eat candy
sometimes, but just make sure it’s not your dinner.

Of all my dreams, my least favorite is the one where I'm in a car. It always begins with me
driving, but eventually I realize that for some reason I'm sitting in the back seat. I can’t keep the
car under control, rushing toward the roadside until, screaming, I wake up.
This is like the passenger experience in Waymo's self-driving cars. You sit in the back seat of
a vehicle and watch as the wheel turns itself above an entirely empty driving seat.
''We made you live your nightmare, '' a Waymo staff member joked after I exited one of the
company's fully self-driving car, following a quick drive inside its secret testing site. Waymo, a
self-driving car company, arranged these rides for 40 journalists at this site.
There were also some demonstrations(演示). We watched as a Waymo car was cut off by a
speeding vehicle. Then the employees created a situation in which a pile of moving boxes fell into
the street just as another car passed in the opposite direction. Throughout the day, the cars
performed impressively, driving with the level of care you might take if you had a wedding cake
in the back seat.
During these demonstrations, Waymo gave information about what it was planning to do with
these vehicles. The company has laid out four ways that its technology could be made available to
the public. But Waymo's CEO, John Krafcik, wouldn’t show which of these was likely to come to
market first, or on what kind of timeline.
I can't help but admire that Waymo is succeeding in developing this technology. There are
countless possibilities at play on the road. The task of programming software to react to all those
situations is unimaginably complex. What a great breakthrough!
4.How did the author feel about her self-driving experience in her dream?
A.It was puzzling. B.It was terrifying.
C.It was amusing. D.It was inspiring.
5.The author is probably _______________.
A.a newspaper reporter B.a professional driver
C.a software developer D.a Waymo staff member
6.What did the author intend to prove by mentioning the wedding cake in paragraph 4?
A.The employees performed well.
B.The self-driving cars worked well.
C.The self-driving cars ran at the same speed.
D.People could depend on the cars in emergencies.
7.What can be inferred from the passage?
A.The self-driving car will come to market soon.
B.The programming software needs to be improved.
C.The technology will make a difference to people's life.
D.The company still has no plan to put the technology into practice.

I have been dancing since I was 14 years old, when my best friend dragged me to an after-
school dance class. I enjoyed that dance class so much that I have been dancing ever since. After
every dance class, however, I always have to stretch out my legs and back to make myself relaxed!
It feels like as much exercise as going to the gym---but dancing is not widely considered to be a
sport. Does that dancing is expressive and artistic mean that it is not a sport?
Some dancers would argue that dancing is a sport, as it requires great physical stamina,
strong muscles and impressive flexibility. No matter what style of dance you are participating in,
you will always be using all of your muscles while dancing and this can often be for several hours
a day. Additionally, in the more traditional dance style (like ballet), men often lift their female
dance partners high in the air. That means the dancers are often just as athletic as footballers,
runners or swimmers.
On the other hand, many people argue that dance is an art form. Dance often exhibit emotion,
represent characters and tell stories. Dancing to music is creative and visually appealing to the
eyes and ears, just like watching a play or a professional show. The shiny costumes, the stage
make-up and the big hairstyles are artistic and imaginative. It is easy to see why many people
consider dance to be an art form.
I personally believe that dance is both a sport and an art. I believe that a great dancer will be
a mixture of an athlete and an artist. You could have the strongest muscles in the world but not
necessarily be a great dancer. Likewise, you could be a great actress who can express emotions
easily but you still might not be able to dance. However, whether you consider dance to be an art
or a sport, the important thing is to enjoy it! Dancing is a great way to make new friends and it’s a
really fun way to exercise!
8.Why does the author think having a dance class is like taking exercise?
A.Because she finds it also needs physical effort.
B.Because she takes interest in dancing as well as in sport.
C.Because she should do much exercise before dancing.
D.Because she finds dancing has hurt her legs and backs.
9.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “stamina” in paragraph 2?
A.activity B.shape
C.strength D.condition
10.How is the text organized?
A.Topic—Comparison—Opinion.
B.Opinion—Discussion—Effect.
C.Main idea—Argument—Discussion.
D.Introduction—Supporting Examples—Conclusion.
11.What is the main artistic feature of dancing?
A.Having a large amount of exercise.
B.Being creative and imaginative.
C.Requiring great physical strength.
D.Creating emotions accurately.
