一、阅读理解(本大题共 16 小题,共 32.0 分)
A
Yesterday night over a dinner with my elder brother's family a topic of happiness came up
My wife Marla a psychologist was sharing Csikszentmihalyi's concept of "flow" with us
Marla explained that according to the research on flow people are happiest when they are
absorbed in a task that is just challenging enough for them to experience a sense of mastery(熟
练).
A few moments later my brother Yuri offered the following opinion "The first and only
necessary and sufficient factor for happiness is to stop associating happiness with pleasure The
two - happiness and pleasure - have nothing to do with each other" This morning with my cup
of coffee I searched through a pile of books on my bedside table and-at the bottom-found a book
by Bertrand Russell I started reading but didn't finish In it I found the following thought
"The human animal like others is adapted to a certain amount of struggle for life and when by
means of great wealth homo sapiens can gratify all his whims (突发奇想) without effort the
mere absence of effort from his life removes an essential ingredient of happiness"
The conversation came full circle people are happiest when they are in a state of flow
Csikszentmihalyi's language )…which is the effortful devotion in a momentwhich has nothing
to do with pleasure
Indeed as Yuri insisted happiness-as-pleasure is a myth the association between happiness
and pleasure is nothing but a semantic(语义的) habit psychologically the two-happiness and
pleasure-are arguably different and breaking up this association between pleasure and happiness
might in fact be a powerfully first step in pursuit of happiness
As I look back on that exchange I recall that there was an effort a struggle to find a common
understanding about this seemingly difficult idea-a struggle that made me happy

A machine that takes sweat-laden (浸满汗水的) clothes and turns the sweat into drinking water
is in use in Sweden The machine makes the clothes turn round quickly heats them to remove
the sweat and then passes the steam through a kind of special material to make purified water
Since it has been brought into use its creators say more than 1000 people have drunk others'
"sweat" in Gothenburg They add the liquid is cleaner than local tap water
The device was built for the United Nations' child-focused charity UNICEF to promote a campaign
highlighting the fact that 780 million people in the world lack access to clean water
The machine was designed and built by the engineer Andreas Hammar known locally for his
appearances on TV tech show "Mekatronik" He said the key part of the sweat machine was a new
water purification part developed by a company named HVR
"It uses a technique called membrane distillation (膜蒸馏)," he told the BBC "We use a
special kind of material that only lets steam through but keeps bacteria salts clothing fibers and
other things out They have something similar to the International Space Station but our machine
is cheaper to build The amount of water it produces depends on how sweaty the person is but
one person's T-shirt typically produces 10ml about a mouthful"
The device has been put on show at the Gothia Cup-the world's largest international youth football
tournament Mattias Ronge chief executive of Stockholm-based advertising agency Deportivo
said the machine had helped raise awareness for UNICEF but in reality had its limitations
"People haven't produced as much sweat as we hoped - right now the weather in Gothenburg is
lousy" Mattias Ronge said "So we've equipped the machine with exercise bikes and volunteers
are cycling like crazy Even so the demand for sweat is greater than the supply And the
machine will never be produced in large numbers since there are better solutions out there such as
water purifying pills"
5. Which of the following is the disadvantage of the sweat machine ______
A. The amount of water the machine produces is rather limited
B. It takes too long for the machine to produce water
C. It costs a large amount of money to build the machine
D. The water processed by the machine is not clean enough

D. tell us who invented the sweat machine
7. What did Mattias Ronge think of the sweat machine ______
A. It could only be used in summer
B. It was not worth popularizing
C. It did not work at all
D. The water it produced tasted sweet
8. The text is written mainly to tell us that ______
A. 780million people in the world lack access to clean water
B. a machine which turns sweat into drinking water is invented
C. a better solution to purifying dirty water is discovered
D. the pill which turns dirty water into clean water is produced

Sure it's good to get along with your teacher because it makes the time you spend in the classroom
more pleasant And yes it's good to get along with your teacher because in general it's smart
to learn how to relate to the different types of people you'll meet throughout your life But really
there's one super-important reason why you should get along with your teacher Kids who get
along with their teachers not only learn more but they're more comfortable asking question and
getting extra help This makes it easier to understand new materials and do your best on tests
When you have this kind of relationship with a teacher he or she can be someone to turn to with
problems such as problems with learning or school issues
As a kid in elementary or middle school you're at a wonderful stage in your life You're like a
sponge (海绵), able to suck up lots of new and exciting information On top of that you're
able to think about all this information in new ways Your teacher knows that and in most
cases is thrilled to be the person who's giving you all that material and helping you put it
together Remember teachers are people too and they feel great if you're open to what
they're teaching you That's why they wanted to be teachers in the first place to teach!
Some kids may be able to learn in any setting whether they like the teacher or not But most kids
are sensitive to the way they get along with the teacher and if things aren't going well they
won't learn as well and won't enjoy being in class
9. What else will you learn from your teacher except knowledge ______
A. How to get in touch with other teachers
B. How to deal with different types of people in the future
C. How to get along with classmates in your school
D. How to solve difficult problems in learning
10. What does the text mainly talk about ______
A. The benefits of getting along well with the teacher
B. Advantages of making the class interesting
C. The responsibilities of the teacher
D. The relationship between the teacher and students
11. What does a good relationship with the teacher mean to you ______
A. You can behave more actively in class
B. You will have more problems in learning
C. You can get more help from the teacher
D. You can ask any questions optionally in class
12. What effect does a bad relationship have on most students ______
A. They can learn by themselves as usual
B. They can't get help from the teacher
C. They feel great in the classmates' heart
D. They may feel uncomfortable in class
D
