Dear Mr. Mendez,
I have heard that there is an opening for a researcher in the Marketing Department, and my
supervisor ( 主 管 )Marla Petrowski, suggested that I contact you about applying for it. I have
worked at Grover for three years now as an office assistant in the Accounting Department. I
previously worked for a year at a small marketing firm called R-J Associates. That is the only
marketing job experience I have, but I have a degree in marketing, which I completed last month.
Now I would like to get a position in my field. Through my years working at Grover, I have become
quite familiar with the way this company works, and I feel that I would have a great deal to offer
Grovers Marketing Department.
I am enclosing my resume ()and could also provide you with letters of reference from my
university professors. Thank you for your attention. I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Sylvia Krim
Dear Ms. Krim,
Thank you for your letter expressing interest in applying for the position in the Marketing
Department. I have spoken with Ms. Petrowski, who highly recommends you for the job. I have also
shown your material to our head researcher, and we both agree that you would be a good asset ( 有价
to our department. Unfortunately, the position you are interested in is not an entry-level
job. We generally require at least twice the amount of marketing job experience that you haveas a
minimum, for that type of position. Although you appear to have a good reference from your former
employer, we feel that you are not yet qualified for the job. However, we will have an opening for a
marketing assistant, possibly as soon as September. I will let you know when that position becomes
available in case you might be interested in applying for it. I hope you will. In the meantime, please
accept my best wishes for your continued success.
Sincerely,
David Mendez Director of Marketing

This was the fourth time this year that Lin had been the new kid in school. Four moves in seven
months, all because her mother's job kept them moving. She had decided back in December that
making new friends was a waste of time. She would join no more clubs. She would add no new
names to her phone list.
On her first day, the teacher Mrs. Leonard welcomed her to the class and let one of her classmates
help her find her way around. This time, it was a girl named Marley, or Carly, or something. Lin had
stopped paying attention to kids' names.
Lin knew that she would forget them all, just as the other kids from all those other schools had
probably forgotten her. As Mrs. Leonard was giving Lin textbooks, Lin made her decision: at this
school she would be memorable.
The next day, Tuesday, instead of wearing the usual jeans and T-shirt, she wore a Halloween
costume. She didn't brush her hair. On Wednesday, she wore an old dress of her mother's, along with
a pair of football boots. “At least they'll remember me after we've moved away, she thought on
Thursday as she put on a skirt, a T-shirt, and a pile of long necklaces her grandmother had given her
to play with.
On Friday, Mrs. Leonard called her mother to school. She was a bit worried about what her mom
would say when she saw her clothes — a hula skirt (草裙) from a vacation in Hawaii worn on top of
a pair of shabby jeans. From inside the principal's office, she heard her mother and Mrs. Leonard
talking.
“She'll be so excited,” her mother said to Mrs. Leonard in the hallway. “We've moved so often, but
this time, we're here to stay. I've got a new job in town. Finally, she'll be able to fit in.”
4. Why didn't Lin care about her classmates' names?
A. She disliked them. B. She might leave them soon.
C. She had a poor memory for names. D. She thought little of people's names.
5. At the new school, Lin decided to_______________.
A. learn from Mrs Leonard B. play tricks on her teacher
C. impress people D. make good use of the textbooks
6. Why was Lin's mother called to school?
A. Because Lin failed an exam. B. Because Lin hurt Mrs Leonard.
C. Because Lin wore unusual clothes. D. Because Lin had no Halloween costumes.
7. We can infer that Lin's mother_______________.
A. didn't care about Lin B. thoroughly understood Lin
C. would criticize Lin sharply D. would move with Lin again

The Green Desert garden centre, which covers more than 5,000 square meters of land, contains
an impressive collection of over 3,000 palm trees ( ).The centre is owned and run by Ali A1
Hamsa, who started the business nearly 20 years ago. He explained how to grow a palm tree from
seed: ‘You have to start before the spring. Place the palm seeds under 3 centimeters of special soil,
so that they can start to grow. This should be done early in the year, preferably in January or
February, but it depends on the temperature. If you have enough water and good soil, the palm will
grow very quickly. ’
Palm trees vary greatly in size. You can buy small ones for the house, or grow them larger for
planting in the garden. The price varies greatly and is based entirely on the height of the palm tree.
Some palms at the garden centre are small, only 30-40 centimeters in height, but nothing under one
metre is ever sold. This is because smaller palms are not yet established.
Once a palm reaches about 100 centimeters, it will be well established and will be able to
survive the move from the garden centre to someone’s home or garden says Ali A1 Hamsa. A
tree which is not established may suffer during transportation from the garden centre environment,
which it is used to, to its new home, whether indoors or in the garden. People who buy palm trees —
in fact, any plant from a garden centre are often totally unaware of how a plant can suffer when
it’s moved.
It is no surprise that palm trees have become increasingly popular in the home. Not only do they
provide a tropical (热带的)atmosphere, they have also proved to be tolerant of a wide range of
indoor conditions, from air conditioning to central heating. Surprisingly, an established indoor palm
needs only a little sunlight for its leaves to retain ()their colour; also, it needs only a little water
once a week to survive. If the roots of a palm drink a lot of water the plant will grow, but this is
not ideal when the palm is grown indoors. Palm trees in a pot in the home are watered to keep them
alive, not to make them grow bigger.
8. When should palm seeds be planted?
A. In spring. B. In summer. C. In autumn. D. In winter.
9. The price of a palm tree depends on its__________. .
A. age B. width C. height D. weight
10. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Who likes to buy palm trees. B. How to transport palm trees.
C. Why small palm trees are not sold. D. What kind of palm tree is popular.
11. An indoor palm tree__________ .
A. needs a lot of sunlight B. needs not much water
C. should be grown without central heating D. should be grown without air conditioning

Are some people born clever, and others born stupid? Or is intelligence developed by our
environment and our experience? Strangely enough, the answer to these questions is yes. To some
extent our intelligence is given to us at birth, and no amount of education can make a genius out of a
child born with low intelligence. On the other hand, a child who lives in a boring environment will
develop his intelligence less than one who lives in rich and varied surroundings. Thus the limits of
person's intelligence are fixed at birth, whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his
environment. This view, now held by most experts, can be supported in a number of ways.
It is easy to show that intelligence is to some extent something we are born with. The closer the
blood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to be in intelligence. Thus if we
take two unrelated people at random from population, it is likely that their degrees of intelligence
will be completely different. If, on the other hand, we take two identical twins, they will very likely
be as intelligent as each other. Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have
