I have been teaching animal behavior at the Boulder County Jail in Colorado for 10 years. The
course is one of the most popular in the prison.Prisoners have to earn the right to attend the course
and they work hard to get in.
One reason why the course is so popular is that many prisoners find it easier to connect with
animals than with peoplebecause animals don't judge them. They trust animals in ways they don't
with humans.
Yetthey hold a misunderstanding of how animals treat one another. Many admit that their own
“animal behavior” is what got them into trouble in the first place.I teach that though there is
competition and aggression in the animal kingdomthere is also a lot of cooperation and sympathy.
Many of the students want to build healthy relationships and they find that the class helps
them.I use examples of the social behavior of groupliving animals such as wolves as a model for
developing and maintaining friendships among people who must work together for their own good
and also for the good of the group.
It's clear that science inspires the students here and it also gives them hope.I know some
students have gone back into education after their being set free while others have gone to work for
humane(人道的) societies or contributed time and money to conservation organizations. One went on
to receive a master's degree in nature writing.
Science and humane education help the prisoners connect with values that they otherwise
would not have done.It opens the door to understanding trust cooperation and hope. There's a
large population of people to whom science could mean a lot if only they could have access to
it.The class helps metoo.I get as much out of it as the students and it has made me a better teacher.
5The author's course is welcomed by the prisoners because ________.
Athey consider animals their best friends
Bthey are curious about the animal kingdom
Cthey feel it easier to get along with animals
Dthey are more familiar with animal behavior
6The author used wolves as an example to ________.
Aprovide the prisoners with more knowledge
Bexplain the cruel side of groupliving animals
Chelp the prisoners realize the importance of teamwork
Dinform the prisoners that animals get people into trouble
7We can infer from the text that some prisoners ________.
Ahave turned over a new leaf
Bare required to attend the course
Care willing to learn working skills
Dprefer humane education to science
C
Technology has become a basic part of our lives. It has transformed our lives in many ways.It
makes life more convenient for uswe can send messages quickly via the Internetcook meals in a
few minutes in a microwave and book train tickets online instead of walking to the
station. However in our increasingly technologydriven world have we become addicted to
technology?
Not too long ago many children enjoyed reading a good book in their spare
time.Nowadays adolescents are more likely to be seen playing video games or watching
television.Similarly sending letters has become a thing of the past.It has been replaced by e-
mailsinstant messaging and social media.I think this is a huge shame for methere's nothing
better than receiving a letter in the post.It shows someone has taken the time to sit down and write
somethingthis is much more personal than a conversation online. For some people—especially the
older generation—new methods of communication aren't so accessible.I regularly send letters and
postcards to my grandma to keep her updated with my life in France I also send them to my
boyfriend and sister.
The presence of social media hasin some respectsturned us into antisocial beings.Instead
of meeting up with friends and seeing them face to face we now spend a lot of time
communicating online.Although online communication has its advantages enabling us to keep in
touch with loved ones in different countries we shouldn't forget the value of reallife human
interaction (相互影响)
AdmittedlyI spend a lot of time using technology.I rely on the Internet and my laptop to plan
lessons for my classes.I use WiFi on my phone to send messages via apps such as Viber and
Snapchat. That saidwhen I'm on holidayit is nice to switch it all off and have a break.Taking a
break from technology is liberating.
8From the first paragraphwe can know technology makes our life ________.
Ahappier Bmore colorful
Cmore diverse Deasier
9How is the second paragraph mainly developed?
ABy inferring.
BBy comparing.
CBy listing importance.
DBy giving explanations.
10Why does the writer prefer receiving a letter rather than an email?
ABecause she isn't good at using computers.
