Life on the street is a constant struggle for homeless people. In times of extreme weather
conditions, that struggle becomes even more difficult. Recently, homeless people across Chicago
faced freezing to death if they couldn't find shelter for the night.
Thankfully, one local woman refused to let that happen. On January 30, 2018, 34-year-old
Candice Payne, a local managing broker, was lucky enough to have shelter from the dangerous
2
conditions.
“It was -20, and I knew they were going to be sleeping on ice and I had to do something,”
said Payne. Payne started brainstorming different ways she could possibly help. Finally, she decided
to see if there were any rooms available at local inns and hotels that she could get to help those
stuck on the street.
For Payne, her mission was personal. According to Payne, her husband, Carlos Callahan, had
lived on the streets at one point in his life. Based on his experiences, Payne knew that the homeless
people still out on the street desperately needed help and that if she didn't step up to help, no one
likely would.
However, when Payne explained what she was trying to domany of the local hotels refused to
allow her to pay for the rooms as they didn't want homeless people to stay in their rooms. “No one
wanted them, but one hotel, the Amber Inn, was nice enough to allow me to buy the rooms,” said
Payne.
Payne's selfless act made news across the country. However, she insisted she had never done it
for attention. “I am a regular person, said Payne, who spent thousands of dollars of her own
money to help complete strangers.“It all sounded like a rich person did this, but I’m just a little
black girl from the South Side. ”
24. What does the underlined word “ that” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Locals living on the street B. The homeless freezing to death.
C. The extreme weather. D. The shelter for the homeless.
25. How did Candice Payne help the homeless people?
A. By drawing public attention. B. By giving them money directly.
C. By taking them to her own house. D. By buying hotel rooms for them.
26. What may contribute to Payne’s nice act?
A. Her husband's past experiences. B. The requests from the homeless.
C. Her desire to become famous. D. The coldness of local hotels.
27. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. A Black Fighter Changes the World B. A Woman’s Curiosity Brings a Reward
C. A Regular Woman Makes a Difference D. A Couple's Brave Act Moves the Country

Making beer on the moon might seem like a pipe dream to many, but for a group of students
from the university of California at San Diego, there is a chance to take their research beyond
Earth’s surface.
The Lab2Moon competition, held by TeamIndus, is offering students the chance to secure a spot
on the TeamIndus rocket this year.
Taking craft beer to the next level, the students want to test whether it’s possible for yeast(酵母)
to work and create beer on the moon. However, they believe the experiment is not just a creative
concept for astronauts, it’s also important for the development of drugs and yeast-containing foods,
like bread.
“The idea started out with a few laughs among a group of friends,” said Neeki Ashari, a
fifth-year bioengineering student at UC San Diego. “We all appreciate the craft of beer. When we
heard that there was an opportunity to design an experiment that would go up on India’s
moonlander, we thought we could combine our hobby with the competition by focusing on the
practicality of yeast in outer space.”
The preparation work for the beer-up to the stage of adding yeast-will all be done on Earth, and
3
rather than separating the fermentation(发酵) and carbonation stages of making beer, the team plans
to combine them.
This removes the need to release CO2 accumulated in the process, which may result in
cleanliness and safety issues out in space.
If selected, Team Original Gravity will be the first to make beer in outer space, and the
fermentation will take place in a vessel no bigger than a soda can.
All teams competing for the place will showcase their ideas in Bangalore, India, in March.
Sadly, you won’t be enjoying moon beer in your local craft beer bar anytime soon, as no
samples will be brought back. However, this small experiment could provide important data on just
how practical it is for us to make and create our own resources on other planets and moons by
learning how consumables behave in different environments.
28.How did the students feel when they got the chance to design the experiment?
A. Excited B. Nervous C. Confident D. Casual
29. What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 6 refer to?
A. The mixing of two stages B. Adding yeast on Earth
C. The preparation work on Earth. D. Fermentation and carbonation
30. What can we learn about the experiment from the passage?
A. It has been designed based on similar experiments.
B. It’s quite competitive compared with other designs.
C. Its design has already been approved by TeamIndus.
D. Its process was adapted to make it safer and greener.
31.What does the author think of the students’ idea?
A. It seems like a pipe dream. B. It’s extremely complicated.
C. It’s meaningful and hopeful. D. It’s creative but impractical.

Most dog owners are convinced that their four-legged friends know exactly what they mean
when they use certain words. However, researchers have always wondered whether they really
understand human speech or if they rely on other ways to know the meaning. A new study by
scientists at Atlanta's Emory University seems to indicate that "man's best friend" does know what
the owner is saying.
To get data from the dogs themselves----not just the reports from their owners, the researchers
asked the owners of twelve dogs to train their pets to identify two toys with different materials by
name. Once the dogs had mastered the task, they took turns inside an MRI(磁共振成像仪). The
owners then tested their dogs by first calling out the names of the toys they had been trained to
recognize and then saying meaningless words such as "bobbu" and "bodmick" while holding up
random objects the dogs hadn't seen before.
The MRI scans showed that certain areas of the dogs' brains showed different brain patterns
when they heard words they were familiar with, compared with the ones they had never heard
before. While not enough to prove that the dogs were picturing their toys when they heard the word,
it did indicate some sort of recognition. 'The researchers believe this is an important step forward in
understanding how dogs process language.
Even more interesting was that the dog's brains showed a higher level of neural(神经的)activity
at the sound of unknown words. This is the exact opposite of what happens in human brains, which
get more active at the sound of familiar words. The researchers assume the dogs may perk up at the
sound of new words to try to understand them in the hope of delighting their masters.
