In the United States, 30 percent of the people have a “weight problem”. To many people the
cause is obvious they eat too much. But scientific evidence (证据) does little to support this idea.
Going back to America of 1910, we find that people were thinner than today, yet they ate more
food. In those days people worked harder physically, walked more, used machines much less, and
didn’t watch television.
Several modern studies, moreover, have shown that fatter people don’t eat more on average than
thinner people. A 1979 study of 3,545 London office workers showed that fat people eat less than
slim people.
Studies also show that slim people are more active than fat people. A study by a research group
at Stanford University found the following interesting facts:
The more the man ran, the greater loss of the body fat.
The more they ran, the greater increase in food intake.
Thus, those who ran the most ate the most, yet lost the greatest amount of body fat.
1Nowadays many Americans have the problem that ______.
Athey are too slim Bthey work too hard
Cthey are too fat Dthey lose too much body fat
2According to the passage, how many people in 900 Americans have a “weight problem”?
A150. B300. C600. D270.
3The Americans in 1910 ________.
Aate more food and had more physical activities
Bate less food but had more physical activities
Cate less food and had less physical activities
Dhad more problems

If you want to become a fluent English speaker you should take some advice. There are four
skills in learning English. They are reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The most important
thing you must remember is that if you want to improve your speaking and writing skills you
should first master the skills of reading and listening.
Read as much as you can. But your reading must be active. It means that you should
understand the meaning of the sentence. There is no need for you to pay much attention to
grammars or try to understand all the unfamiliar words you come across, but the fact that you see
them for the first time and recognize them whenever you see them, for example, in other passages
or books, is enough. It would be better to prepare yourself a notebook so you can write down the
important words or sentences in it.
As for listening, there are two choices: besides reading, you can listen every day for about 30
minutes. You can only pay attention to your reading and become skillful at your reading, and then
you can catch up on your listening. Since you have lots of inputs (输入) in your mind, you can
easily guess what the speaker is going to say. This never means that you should not practice.
For listening you can listen to cartoons or some movies that are specially made for children.
Their languages are easy. Or if you are good at listening you can listen to VOA or BBC programs
every day. Again the thing to remember is being active in listening and preferably taking some
notes.
If you follow these pieces of advice, your speaking and writing will improve automatically,
and you can be sure that with a little effort they will become perfect.
4According to the writer, which should you improve first among the four skills?
AReading and listening. BReading and writing.
CWriting and speaking. DSpeaking and listening.
5To improve your reading, when you read you should________.
Alook up all the new words in the dictionary
Bthink about what you are reading actively
Cspend more time studying grammars
Dset down as many words and sentence as possible
6The passage is mainly about how to _______.
Achoose good listening materials
Bremember new words in reading
Cimprove your English as quickly as possible
Dbecome fluent in speaking and writing English
7The underlined phrase “come across” in the second paragraph can probably be replaced by (

Ameet by accident Bdiscover Cfind on purpose Dlook for

A young woman went to her grandmother and told her about her life and how things were
so hard for her. She didn’t know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was
tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as one problem was solved, a new one would pop up.
Her grandmother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and placed each on
a high fire, and soon the pots came to boil. In the first pot she placed carrots, in the second she
placed eggs, and in the last she placed ground coffee beans.
She let them boil, without saying a word. In about 20 minutes she turned off the burners. She
fished the carrots out and asked her granddaughter to feel the carrots they were soft. She pulled the
eggs out and break it. After pulling off the shell, the granddaughter found the hard boiled egg.
Then she spooned up the coffee, placed it in a bowl, and invited the granddaughter to sip the
coffee. The granddaughter smiled as she tasted its rich smell then asked, “What does it mean,
grandmother?”
“Carrots, eggs and coffee.”
Her grandmother explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity: boiling
water. Each reacted differently. The carrot went in the pot strong and hard. However, after
suffering the boiling water, it softened and became weak. The egg used to be breakable. Its thin
outer shell had protected its liquid inner part, but after sitting through the boiling water, its inside
became hardened. The ground coffee beans were amazing, however. After they were in the boiling
water, they had changed the water.
“Which are you?” the grandmother asked .
8What was wrong with the young woman?
AShe is poor in cook. BShe found life too difficult for her.
CShe could not solve a problem. DShe had a fight with her husband.
9What can we infer from the passage?
AThe granddaughter loved the coffee most.
BThe grandmother asked her granddaughter to take an egg.
CThe granddaughter chose to be someone like the coffee beans.
