This Ride Guide will help you navigate through the city. Inside, you will find important information on the
Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) streetcars, buses, subway trains and stations.
Streetcars
The TTC is planning its new, low-floor streetcars to replace its current streetcars. The streetcars entered

comfortable with no internal steps.
Express & ‘Rockets’
The TTC operates express or limited-stop rocket services on 25 bus routes. All of the services operate during
peak periods from Monday to Friday, and some of the services also operate at off-peak times. Five of the routes
are premium-fare Downtown Express routes. Customers travelling on these routes pay a premium (额外费用) fare
that is double the regular TTC fare. All other express and rocket routes charge regular TTC fares.
Subway Service
TTC subways operate weekdays and Saturdays from approximately 6 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. Sunday service

An obviously good cupboard simply sat by the dustbin in the parking lot. Probably it was something they
were getting rid of, I guessed.
My family was in need of all the extra storage space we could find at this point. We were living on top of one
another in the small house my husband, Martin and I owned. However, our younger son had stopped his college
courses and moved home. Hit hard by the bad economic situation, our elder son with his wife and my precious
grandchild moved back home too while he looked for work. This cupboard wouldn’t solve all our problems, but at
least the living room would look a little less chaotic (混乱的).
One of the nice things about the boys being back home was that their father and I never had to do the heavy
lifting. “Wesley, meet me behind the cupboard,” I told our younger son over the phone. Once he arrived we got the
cupboard loaded in my trunk). Then we opened the big box. Inside was a five-foot-tall dollhouse.
Even the little furniture was broken: a sofa and a lamp in baby blue, the color of my own living room at home.
“We should take this too,” Wesley said. “Luke might play with it when he gets a little older.” What a thoughtful
uncle Wesley was!
Late that same night, while everyone else was asleep, I went back to the living room to have a look again. A
house just like the neat dollhouse I was starting at now: everything neat and clean and in its proper place. “ When
I grow up, I’ll marry a prince and we’ll live in a nice house like that one,” I thought when I was a child. But now,
every one of us under this roof was at loose ends. It would take more than a new cupboard to get things in order
around here. I went to bed with the impression of that perfect dollhouse in my head.
The next evening I was getting everything ready for dinner. My daughter-in-law was setting the table. Wesley
and I were in the kitchen, getting the food just right. The others were in the study, watching the game. Suddenly I
felt so thankful. My two responsible sons, my kind-hearted daughter-in-law, my lovely grandchildren, and Martin,
my prince, were all under one roof. Maybe our house was a bit crowded, but in every free inch of space was love.
My dream had come true. I had the home I’d always wanted.

It’s the ultimate dream for manymove to a big city and make a shining new life.
But as we all know, metropolitan ( ) living comes at a cost especially if you pick Hong Kong,
Paris or Zurich, which are the world’s most expensive cities according to new research.
The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU)which rates 133 global cities, and compares the price of a basket of
138 everyday items in eachhas ranked them as joint top of the table.
The European cities have leapfrogged () over Singapore and Osaka, which tied with Hong Kong in the
previous Worldwide Cost of Living Survey, carried out in March.
The changes are especially marked this time around, with the report doubling as an assessment of the impact
of the Covid-19 pandemic (流行病) on prices around the world.
Singapore and Osaka are now down to fourth and fifth respectively, with Tel Aviv tying with Osaka in fifth
place. An exodus of foreign workers during the pandemic is behind Singapore's dropwhich saw its population
fall for the first time in 17 yearsaccording to the EIU.
The top 10 is completed by Geneva, New York City, Copenhagen and Los Angeles.
The biggest rise is Tehran, which has climbed up the ladder from 106th to 79th, due to US sanctions ( )
impacting supplies. Reykjavik, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo show the biggest price drops. The EIU owes the
Brazilian cities’ rankings to “weak currency and rising poverty levels”. Brazil, of course, has suffered hugely
during the pandemic.
“The Covid-19 pandemic has caused the US dollar to weaken while western European and north Asian
currencies have strengthened against it, which in turn has shifted prices for goods and services” said Upasana
Dutt, head of worldwide cost of living at the EIU.
“The pandemic has transformed consumer behaviour, as lockdowns and trends such as working from home
have increased the prices of consumer electronics and meal-at-home kits have taken the place of restaurant dining
for middle-class families.”
As for the future, things don't look rosy. The EIU predicts that the trends will continue, with people cautious
about spending and sure to struggle to make ends meet during 2021.

9. The underlined word “exodus” is close in meaning to _________

One of the most recognizable symbols of Scotland is the kilt ( 百褶裙). Resembling knee-length skirts, kilts
originated in the 16th century as a common form of clothing for men and boys living in an area of northern
Scotland known as the Scottish Highlands. A special feature of kilts, even to this day, is the plaid ( 格 子 呢 )
patterns. These patterns were historically related to specific clans (), which are family groups that share a
relationship through ancestry () or some other connections. Known as tartans (), the plaid patterns
are of various colors. Because of their popularity in the Scottish Highlands, the wearing of kilts and any tartan
pattern in general was banned from 1746 to 1782 to try to control clans from that region that were opposed to the
king at the time. After clans were no longer considered a threat to the king, the clothing ban was removed.
Although the removal of the ban meant people could once again wear kilts with their clan’s tartan, they did
not become the regular dress of males there. Instead, they came to represent a traditional form of clothing, and be
symbolic of national pride. Tartans of all types can be seen on show all over the world on April 6, Tartan Day,
when people of Scottish ancestry celebrate their cultural treasure. Tartan Day originated in Canada in the mid-
1980s. It spread to other communities of the Scottish diaspora in the 1990s.
Nowadays, tartans have been specifically created for individuals, families, institutions, and companies.
Perhaps the best-known example of a tartan used by a company is that of the British company Burberry. Burberry
has used tartans on a variety of products, including scarves, handbags, clothing, and other accessories. Although in
2019, Burberry announced it would reduce the number of products it produced to focus more on handbags as a
way to increase profits, their iconic tartan continues to be a symbol of high fashion.
12In which aspect are kilts special?
APlaid patterns are used in the kilts.
BThey are of the same color in Scotland.
CPeople show respect for the king by wearing them.
DThey are designed for adult men.
13Why do Scottish people exhibit different tartans in April?
ATo express tartans shouldn’t be ignored.
BTo spread this culture to the world.
CTo honor the end of the ban on tartans.
DTo celebrate a tradition.
14Why does the author mention the company Burberry?
ATo stress tartans’ wide range of daily uses.
