I was 15.She looked like she was over 70. But on that day, I think she

understood me more than anyone else.

Walking into the church that Sunday was hard. I had never let anyone see me

cry. But I knew I would cry that day. My grandfather was suddenly ill. The doctors

said he might not live much longer. Everyone in my family was crying. Grandpa was

the sweetest man in the world. Why was he leaving us?

There weren’t many people at church that day. One of them was an old lady

sitting at the end of my row. She was smiling. I closed my eyes and prayed(祷告) for

my grandfather to get better. Soon, my eyes were full of tears. I opened my eyes

and saw a hand in front of me. It was giving me a tissue(纸巾).

The old lady was sitting next to me, smiling. She didn’t say a word. She just gave

me a tissue and a smile. I tried to thank her, but only tears came out. Then she took

my hand. I looked into her eyes. They were clear and blue, and they make me feel

peaceful. Her smile said to me: I am with you. Everything will be OK. I closed my

eyes again. When I opened them, she wasn’t there. I left the church but still couldn’t

find her. I never saw her again.

My grandfather died the next week. We all cried a lot. But when I thought of

that old lady’s warm smile, I felt a little better.

King Midas loves money than anything else. One day an old man said to

him ， “ Wish for anything you like and I'll give it to you.”The king answered at

into shining gold. King Midas was very excited. He touched many flowers and plants

in the garden. He ran into the palace and touched chairs and tables. Everything he

touched turned into gold! “I am the happiest man，”Midas cried.

But then he tried to eat an apple and it turned into gold.“Oh dear ！”said the

king.“I can't eat or drink anything at all！”

Just then his daughter ran into the room and put her arms around him. At once

she became a golden statue. King Midas was still more unhappy now，for he loved

his little daughter more than gold. He began to cry.

Suddenly the old man appeared.“Are you happy now ？ ” he

asked.“Oh，no！”said the king.“Give me back my daughter.”“Very well！”said the old

man.“You have learned your lesson. Go and wash your hands in the river. Everything

that you touch will not be gold any longer.”

King Midas ran quickly to have a wash in the river. Then he touched the golden

statue，and there was his daughter. The tables，chairs，plants and flowers were no

longer made of gold. King Midas was able to eat and drink again. He was very

happy.

English is the native or official language of onefifth of the land area of the world.

It is spoken in North America, Great Britain, Australia, and New Zealand. In South

Africa and India it is one of the official languages.

More people study English than any other language. In many countries, the

textbooks in universities are in English. Many university classes are taught in English

even though the native language is not English.

English is the language of international communication. It is the language of

international business, research, and science. More than threefourths of the world's

mail is written in English. More than half of the scientific research journals are in

English. Most other languages have borrowed many English words.

Why did English become the international language? In the middle of the

nineteenth century, French was the international language. Then Britain became

very powerful in the world. England started colonies( 殖民地) in North America and

India in the seventeenth century. By 1900 England also had colonies in other parts

of Asia, Africa and the South Pacific. The people in the colonies had to use English.

Slowly it became more important than French internationally. After the Second

World War, the United States became very powerful, and even more people began

to learn English.

Is English a good international language? It has more words than any other

language. The grammar is simpler than in the other major languages. However,

English spelling is difficult. Foreigners all have trouble spelling English. So do native

speakers!

Since 1880, people have invented over fifty artificial(人造的) languages. No one

speaks them as a native language. However, none of them has ever become

popular. Some people don't want to study English, but it is the international

language. There is no way to change that now.
