Long long ago there lived a wise man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a
habit of walking on the beach before he began his work.
One day he was walking along the shore. As he looked down the beach, he saw a human figure
moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself at the thought that someone would dance on the beach.
So he began to walk faster to catch up.
As he got closer, he saw that it was a young man and the young man wasn’t dancing, but
instead he was reaching down to the shore, picking up something and very gently throwing it into the
ocean.
As he got closer he called out, “Good morning! What are you doing?
The young man paused, looked up and replied, “Throwing starfish in the ocean.” “I guess I
should have asked, why are you throwing starfish in the ocean?” “The sun is up and the tide is going
out, and if I don’t throw them in they’ ll die.”
“But, young man, don’t you realize that there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along
it. You can’t possibly make a difference!”
The young man listened politely, then he bent down, picked another starfish and threw it into
the sea, past the breaking waves and said, “It made a difference for that one.”
There is something very special in each and every one of us. We have all been gifted with the
ability to make a difference. And if we can know that gift, we will gain through the strength of our
visions the power to shape the future.
We must each find our starfish. And if we throw our starfish wisely and well, the world will be
better.

Can trees talk? Yes, but not in words. Scientists have reason to believe that trees do
communicate with each other. Not long ago, researchers learned some surprising things.
First a willow tree (柳树)attacked in the woods by caterpillars () changed the chemistry
of its leaves and made them taste so terrible that they got tired of the leaves and stopped eating them.
Then even more astonishing, the tree sent out a special smell---a signal causing its neighbors to
change the chemistry of their own leaves and make them less tasty.
Communication, of course, doesn’t need to be in words. We can talk to each other by smiling,
raising our shoulders and moving our hands. We know that birds and animals use a whole
vocabulary of songs, sounds, and movements.
For example, bees dance their signals, flying in certain patterns that tell other bees where to find
nectar (花蜜) for honey. So why shouldn’t trees have ways of sending message?
8. It can be concluded from the passage that caterpillars do not feed on leaves that .
A. bees don’t like B. have an unfamiliar shape
B. are lying on the ground D. have an unpleasant taste
9. The willow tree described in the passage protected itself by .
A.growing more branches B.changing its leaf chemistry
C.communicating with birds and bees D.shaking caterpillars off
10. According to the passage, the willow tree was able to communicate with other trees by .
A. waving its branches B. giving off a special smell
C.dropping its leaves D.changing the colour of its trunk
11. According to this passage, bees communicate by .
A.smelling one another B. making unusual sound
