Marjanishvili Theatre Tbilisi l Georgian

One of the most famous theatres in Georgia，the Marjanishvili，founded in 1928，appears

regularly at theatre festivals all over the world. This new production of As You Like It is

helmed(指导)by the company's Artistic Director Levan Tsuladze.

Deafinitely Theater London/British Sign Language(BSL)

By translating the rich and humourous text of Lover's Labour's Lost into the physical language

of BSL，Deafinitely Theater creates a new interpretation of Shakespeare's comedy and aims to

build a bridge between deaf and hearing worlds by performing to both groups as one audience.

Habima National Theatre Tel Aviv/Hebrew

The Habima is the centre of Hebrewlanguege theatre worldwide. Founded in Moscow after the

1905 revolution，the company eventually settled in Tel Aviv in the late 1920s.Since 1958，they

have been recognized as the national theatre of Israel. This production of Shakespeare's The

Merchant of Venice marks their first visit to the UK.

An old man lived alone in Minnesota. He wanted to spade(铲)his potato garden, but it was

hard work. His only son, who would have helped him, was in prison. The old man wrote a letter to

his son and mentioned his situation:

Dear son, I am feeling pretty bad because it looks like I won’t be able to plant my potato

garden this year. I hate to miss doing the garden, because your mother always loved planting time.

I’m just getting too old to be digging up a garden plot. If you were here, all my trouble would be

over. I know you would dig the plot for me, if you were not in prison.

Love, Dad

Shortly, the old man received this telegram:

“For Heaven’s sake, Dad, don’t dig up the garden!! That’s where I buried the GUNS!!”

At 4 am the next morning, a dozen FBI agents （联邦调查局） and local police officers

showed up and dug up the entire garden without finding any guns.

Confused, the old man wrote another note to his son telling him what had happened, and

asked him what to do next.

His son’s reply was :“Go ahead and plant your potatoes, Dad. It’s the best I could do for you

from here.”

No matter where you are in the world, if you have decided to do something deep from your

heart, there is nothing that can stop you from doing it. It is the thought that matters , not where you

When it comes to helping developing countries, we often think about offering money in order

that they can build schools and hospitals, buy food and medicine, or find clean water supplies.

These seem to be the most important basic needs in their lives. However, it's far from enough. We

have to come up with better ideas.

A man called Nicholas Negroponte invented a cheap laptop computer, which he decided to

invent after he visited a school in Cambodia. The laptop which Mr. Negroponte has designed is

not the same as the normal one that you can buy in the shops. One difference is that it will be

covered in rubber so that it is strong and won't be damaged easily. As an electricity supply can be a

problem in developing countries, the computer also has a special handle in order that children

can wind the computer up to give it extra power just as easy as setting a clock.

This special laptop computer will cost less than 100 US dollars and Mr. Negroponte wants to

produce as many as 15 million laptop computers in the first year. The idea is that these computers

will help the children's education as they will be able to access the Internet. These computers

might not benefit the people in developing countries immediately, but by improving children's

education they should help people to find their own solutions to their problems in the long term.

Another idea to help children in developing countries is to recycle old mobile phones so that

they can be used again in the UK and probably in many other countries too, millions of mobile

phones are thrown away every year. The waste crested by throwing away these old phones is very

bad for the environment, so it seems to be an excellent idea to achieve two important goals at the

same time. We will reduce the waste we produce and help others, in other words, we will be able

to "kill two birds with one stone" and that is always a good thing.

Getting rid of dirt, in the opinion of most people, is a good thing. However, there is nothing

fixed about attitudes to dirt.

In the early 16th century, people thought that dirt on the skin was a means to block out

disease, as medical opinion had it that washing off dirt with hot water could open up the skin and

let ills in. A particular danger was thought to lie in public baths. By 1538, the French king had

closed the bath houses in his kingdom. So did the king of England in 1546. Thus began a long

time when the rich and the poor in Europe lived with dirt in a friendly way. Henry IV, King of

France, was famously dirty. Upon learning that a nobleman had taken a bath, the king ordered that,

to avoid the attack of disease, the nobleman should not go out.

Though the belief in the advantage of dirt was long-lived, dirt has no longer been regarded as

a nice neighbor ever since the 18th century. Scientifically speaking, cleaning away dirt is good to

health. Clean water supply and hand washing are practical means of preventing disease. Yet, it
