An old man lived alone in Minnesota. He wanted to spade()his potato garden, but it was
hard work. His only son, who would have helped him, was in prison. The old man wrote a letter to
his son and mentioned his situation:
Dear son, I am feeling pretty bad because it looks like I won’t be able to plant my potato
garden this year. I hate to miss doing the garden, because your mother always loved planting time.
I’m just getting too old to be digging up a garden plot. If you were here, all my trouble would be
over. I know you would dig the plot for me, if you were not in prison.
Love, Dad
Shortly, the old man received this telegram:
“For Heaven’s sake, Dad, don’t dig up the garden!! That’s where I buried the GUNS!!”
At 4 am the next morning, a dozen FBI agents and local police officers
showed up and dug up the entire garden without finding any guns.
Confused, the old man wrote another note to his son telling him what had happened, and
asked him what to do next.
His son’s reply was :“Go ahead and plant your potatoes, Dad. It’s the best I could do for you
from here.”
No matter where you are in the world, if you have decided to do something deep from your

When it comes to helping developing countries, we often think about offering money in order
that they can build schools and hospitals, buy food and medicine, or find clean water supplies.
These seem to be the most important basic needs in their lives. However, it's far from enough. We
have to come up with better ideas.
A man called Nicholas Negroponte invented a cheap laptop computer, which he decided to
invent after he visited a school in Cambodia. The laptop which Mr. Negroponte has designed is
not the same as the normal one that you can buy in the shops. One difference is that it will be
covered in rubber so that it is strong and won't be damaged easily. As an electricity supply can be a
problem in developing countries, the computer also has a special handle in order that children
can wind the computer up to give it extra power just as easy as setting a clock.
This special laptop computer will cost less than 100 US dollars and Mr. Negroponte wants to
produce as many as 15 million laptop computers in the first year. The idea is that these computers
will help the children's education as they will be able to access the Internet. These computers
might not benefit the people in developing countries immediately, but by improving children's
education they should help people to find their own solutions to their problems in the long term.
Another idea to help children in developing countries is to recycle old mobile phones so that
they can be used again in the UK and probably in many other countries too, millions of mobile
phones are thrown away every year. The waste crested by throwing away these old phones is very
bad for the environment, so it seems to be an excellent idea to achieve two important goals at the
same time. We will reduce the waste we produce and help others, in other words, we will be able
to "kill two birds with one stone" and that is always a good thing.
28.The underlined phrase "wind up" in paragraph 2 means .
A.吹风 B.给……上紧发条 C.拆开 D.带走
29.The laptop computer that Mr. Negroponte has designed .
Awill be damaged much easier than the normal one
Bhas a special handle to access the Internet
Cis cheap and can run with extra power
Dcan be helpful to find the people's own solutions
30.Mr. Negroponte's cheap computer is mentioned in the passage to .
Aillustrate the kindness of people in the developed countries
Btell us what high technology can help people
Cshow how to find business opportunities in developing countries
Dgive an example of how to help developing countries
31.Which is the best idea the author gives us to help the developing countries?
AWe need to think about more ways to help people in developing countriesnot just throw
money at the problem.
BWe should spend much money helping people in developing countries build more schools
and hospitals.
CWe should think about giving help to developing countries by giving them all we have.
DWe should help the people in developing countries by improving children's education
immediately.

Getting rid of dirt, in the opinion of most people, is a good thing. However, there is nothing
fixed about attitudes to dirt.
In the early 16th century, people thought that dirt on the skin was a means to block out
disease, as medical opinion had it that washing off dirt with hot water could open up the skin and
let ills in. A particular danger was thought to lie in public baths. By 1538, the French king had
closed the bath houses in his kingdom. So did the king of England in 1546. Thus began a long
time when the rich and the poor in Europe lived with dirt in a friendly way. Henry IV, King of
France, was famously dirty. Upon learning that a nobleman had taken a bath, the king ordered that,
to avoid the attack of disease, the nobleman should not go out.
Though the belief in the advantage of dirt was long-lived, dirt has no longer been regarded as
a nice neighbor ever since the 18th century. Scientifically speaking, cleaning away dirt is good to
health. Clean water supply and hand washing are practical means of preventing disease. Yet, it
