MONEY-SAVING TIPS FOR DISNEY WORLD
Every time you visit Disney World, there's something new to see. What began in
1971 as the Magic Kingdom now includes the high-techs movie-mad Disney and
Animal Kingdom. Each time the park expands ( 扩 大 ), so do your chances to spend
money. How can you save? As a family guide to Disney World, I've developed a few
money-saving plans.
Buy the five-day All-in One Hopper Pass ( 入场券). Even if you're visiting for
fewer days, it's a deal (the pass costs $ 229 for visitors ages 10 and up, $ 183for kids
ages three to nine and is free for kids underage three). Without the pass, you'll have to
pay separately for Pleasure Island and the water-parks. A single trip to Blizzard Beach,
for example, would cost a family of four $ 100.
Dine out at lunch. The prices at some of the nicer restaurants, especially those in
Epcot's World Showcase, are much lower at noontime than at dinner. It's wise to make
reservations (预定) before you leave home. Call 407-W-DISNEY.
■ Become a Gold Card Member, For $ 65, you can get a Magic Kingdom Club Gold
Card (call 1-800-56-DISNEY), Card holders get up to 20 percent off Disney hotel
rooms, plus price breaks on character breakfast, theme park ( 主 题 公 园 ) ticket and
goods from Disney stores,
Don't pay extra to see a character. Character-theme dinner shows are expensive,
costing a family of four about $ 140, and even a character breakfast, where Mickey or
Donald Duck joins you for cakes, can set you back $ 50. If your budget () is tight,
try to meet the characters inside the theme parks and at free in-park shows. You can
watch the Diamond Horseshoe show, for example, in the Magic Kingdom for no
additional cost while the similarly themed Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue requires
expensive tickets.
Wait until the end of your trip to buy souvenirs (纪念品). By then, the kids will
really know what they want, and they won't waste money on expensive things.

At first Kate thought the Romanian girl could not speak and understand English.
Nadia would not reply to anything Kate said. Kate was in charge of showing Nadia
around on her first day at Buckminster Grade School. Kate could not figure out why the
school had put Nadia in a class where she could not understand what people were
saying.
"Why did they do this?" Kate wondered aloud. "I mean, you can't learn if you can't
understand the teacher." Nadia's voice was a whisper. "I understand English. I will
learn." Nadia's English was perfect.
Kate was perplexed. She couldn't understand why Nadia did not like to speak. Then
she realized that moving to a new country probably wasn't the easiest thing to do. There
were hundreds of unfamiliar and unusual things to learn-all at the same time.
"There are a lot of new things to learn, huh?" said Kate. Nadia nodded rapidly. In a
quiet voice she replied. "Many things people say, I do not understand. I have been
speaking English and Romanian all my life, but I do not know what some children are
saying. For example, yesterday a boy asked if I could help him find the USB port on a
thin black box he was carrying. Isn't a port a place for ships? It made no sense to me."
"Don't worry." said Kate. "You'll figure everything out in time. You see, that thin black
box was a computer. A USB port is a place where you can connect other machines to a
computer." Nadia and Kate were quiet after that. They took notes while the teacher gave
a maths lesson. To Kate's surprise, Nadia put up her hand and offered to answer
questions at the blackboard.
Nadia solved every question the teacher gave her. Some of the questions were really
difficult, and no one understood what was going on except Nadia and the teacher. When
the teacher said that Nadia answered everything correctly, the whole class clapped their
hands.
Nadia was smiling when she sat back down next to Kate. "Some things," she said in
a normal voice, "are the same all over the world."

A. puzzled B. angry C. shocked D. serious

politeness

A. Nadia was better at maths than other students.
B. Nadia found some of the maths questions difficult.
C. Nadia was encouraged to answer questions in class.
D. Nadia understood the maths better than other teachers.

The Pacific island nation of Nauru used to be a beautiful place. Now it is an
ecological disaster area. Nauru’s heartbreaking story could have one good consequence
— other countries might learn from its mistakes.
For thousands of years, Polynesian people lived in the remote island of Nauru, far
from western civilization. The first European to arrive was John Fearn in 1798. He was
the British captain of the Hunter, a whaling ship. He called the island Pleasant Island.
However, because it was very remote, Nauru had little communication with
Europeans at first. The whaling ships and other traders began to visit, bringing guns and
alcohol. These elements destroyed the social balance of the twelve family groups on the
island. A ten-year civil war started, which reduced the population from 1,400 to 900.
Nauru’s real troubles began in 1899 when a British mining company discovered
phosphate (磷酸)on the island. In fact, it found that the island of Nauru was nearly all
phosphate, which was a very important fertilizer for farming. The company began
mining the phosphate.
A phosphate mine is not a hole in the ground; it is a strip mine. When a company
strip-mines, it removes the top layer of soil. Then it takes away the material it wants.
Strip mining totally destroys the land. Gradually, the lovely island of Nauru started to
look like the moon.
In 1968, Nauru became one of the richest countries in the world. Every year the
government received millions and millions of dollars for its phosphate. Unfortunately,
the leaders invested the money unwisely and lost millions of dollars. In addition, they
used millions more dollars for personal expenses. Soon people realized that they had a
terrible problem their phosphate was running out. Ninety percent of their island was
destroyed and they had nothing. By 2000, Nauru was financially ruined. Experts say
