Children Raised in Greener Areas Have Higher IQ
Growing up in a greener urban environment boosts children’s intelligence and lowers levels of difficult
behaviour, a study has found.
The analysis of more than 600 children aged 10 to 15 showed that a 3% increase in the greenness of their
neighborhood raised their IQ score ____11____ an average of 2.6 points. The effect was seen in both richer and
poorer areas.
There is already significant evidence for green spaces’ effects on improving various aspects of children’s
cognitive development but this is the first research ____12____ (examine) IQ. The cause is uncertain but may
____13____ (link) to lower stress levels, more play and social contact or a quieter environment.
The increase in IQ points was particularly significant for those children at the lower end of the spectrum,
____14____ small increases could make a big difference, the researchers said.
“Evidence has built up over time ____15____ green surroundings are associated with improved cognitive
functioning, such as memory skills and attention,” said Tim Nawrot, a professor of environmental epidemiology at
Hasselt University in Belgium, where the study was conducted.
“____16____ this study adds by including IQ is a more rigorous, well-established clinical measure. It is really
of value to create an optimal environment for children to develop their full potential, ____17____ is why I think
city builders or urban planners should prioritize investment in green spaces.”
The study, published in the journal Plos Medicine, used satellite images to measure the level of greenness in
neighborhoods, including parks, gardens, street trees and all other vegetation.
The average IQ score was 105 but the scientists found 4% of children in areas with low levels of greenery
scored below 80, ____18____ no children scored below 80 in areas with more greenery.
The benefits of more greenery ____19____ (record) in urban areas were not replicated in suburban or rural
areas. Nawrot suggested this might be because those places had enough greenness for all children living there to
benefit.
Behavioral difficulties such as poor attention and aggressiveness were also measured in the children
____20____ (use) a standard rating scale, and the average score was 46. In this case, a 3% rise in greenery resulted
in a two-point reduction in behavioral problems, in line with previous studies.
Section B
(A)
Directions: Fill in each blank with a proper word chosen from the box. Each word can be used only once. Note that
there is one word more than you need.
A. promoting B. unwise C. authority D. shape E. disciplining F. included
G. evolved H. specific I. point J. accompanied K. noticeable
For the past 50 years, spanking(打) has been used to discipline children less and less. But almost every parent
still yells at their child from time to time.
Roaring is probably the most ____21____ behavior of parenting today. It does not help you establish
____22____. Instead, it makes your child feel like you are out of control. Indeed, it is a reaction of parents who do
not know what to do.
But most parents, myself ____23____, find it really hard to go a day without roaring. The latest research on
shouting encourages parents to ask themselves two questions: What should I do? How can I get rid of this habit?
As a tool, corrective shouting has no effect; it is just a habitual slap at the child. We yell at our children for the
same thing every day, and because it is ineffective, we have to yell more and more fiercely. Put your clothes away!
Come down for dinner!
Alan Kazdin, a professor of psychology and child psychiatry at Yale University, says that yelling is not really a
strategy for ____24____ children, but a means of venting(发泄) one’s self.
Kazdin is ____25____ a project called ABCs, which represents antecedents, behavior and consequences.
Antecedents cover what to do before the behavior. Preconditions are set in advance. Specifically, you should tell
your child these conditions before you want them to do anything. Behavior is when parents define, ____26____ and
model behavior. Consequences suggest that when the preferred action is performed, parents should approve of it
and that they should then make an exaggerated compliment, ____27____ by the movement of a limb(肢) in a
manner which suggests the action’s agreeableness.
Therefore, it is suggested that parents not yell at their children every night because they throw their shoes
around, but instead ask them in the morning if they can place their shoes where they belong when they return home.
ABC Praise is a very ____28____ technique. You must be enthusiastic, so you must put a broad smile on your
face and even raise your hand to wave. Next you have to say what you praise with a cheerful voice. The third step
is to stroke the child and give him some words of praise. These steps, which may seem silly to many, are its
