Listening Comprehension
Section A
Directions: In Section A, you will hear ten short conversations between two speakers. At the end of
each conversation, a question will be asked about what was said. The conversations and the questions
will be spoken only once. After you hear a conversation and the question about it, read the four possible
answers on your paper, and decide which one is the best answer to the question you have heard.
1. M: Excuse me, but I’d like to draw some cash.
W: Will you step right over to the second window, please?
Q: Where does the conversation most probably take place?
2. M: So when are the other guys going to get here? The train is leaving in 10 minutes.
W: It’s 10:30 already. They’re supposed to be here by now. I told everybody to meet here by 10:15.
Q: When is the train leaving?
3. W: Can you believe it? A twenty-page term paper and the final exam! What does Professor Johnson
think?
M: Wait a moment. I’m sure what he said was either one or the other.
Q: What does the man mean?
4. W: I got some bad news today. The store where I work is laying off staff.
M: Are they going to make you go?
Q: What does the man want to know?
5. W: Why don’t you wear that yellow shirt that your aunt gave you for your birthday?
M: I love that shirt. But two buttons are missing.
Q: What are the two speakers mainly talking about?
6. W: What’s the problem? Don’t you have your apartment key?
M: It’s a good thing I leave a spare one with my neighbor. I am going to stop by, ask for it and get my
books.
Q: What will the man most probably do next?
7. W: It’s no use. I’ll never learn to swim as well as you do.
M: Don’t give up so easily. Remember I practically grow in the water.
Q: What can be learned from the conversation?
8. M: I talked to Philip today and he said he’d be coming to the party this weekend.
W: Oh, so he can come after all.
Q: What can be inferred about Philip?
9. W: This course is much too hard for me.
M: I had already reminded you before you chose it. It was you yourself who insisted on taking it,
right?
Q: What does the man imply?
10. W: I studied French in high school, but I never really learned it until this summer in Paris.
M: Really using the language makes all the difference, doesn’t it?
Q: What does the man mean?
Section B
Directions: In Section B, you will hear two short passages and one longer conversation, and you will
be asked several questions on each of them. The passages and the conversation will be read twice, but
the questions will be spoken only once. When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on
your paper and decide which one is the best answer to the question you have heard.
Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.
Gardens can be incredible spaces. They not only provide us with food and other resources to keep
our bodies healthy, but they can also be great for our emotional well-being.
Researchers note that gardening is beneficial because it combines physical activity with social
interaction and exposure to nature and sunlight. Tending your own garden over time can also promote
healing and mental well-being.
One study shows gardening can help you to develop an ability to cope with difficult situations.
Not everything in a garden will go according to plan. And small disappointments and frustrations will
help you learn how to cope when other things go wrong. Meanwhile, you can learn patience, and begin
to appreciate that there are things outside of your control. With each small success, however, your
confidence in your own skills and abilities will continue to grow.
What’s more, tending a garden can help you feel more connected to the natural world, and also, of
course, to others who might garden alongside you. Whether you garden on your own or with others,
this can help you feel less lonely.
Additionally, gardening can help people heal after mental health problems, and help them to find
their place in the world. As we can see, gardens grow more than just plants.
(Now listen again, please)
Questions:
11. What is the passage mainly about?
12. Why is gardening beneficial according to some researchers?
13. How can gardening affect us according to the passage?
Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.
Nowadays, pet products companies offer a wide range of smart pet devices. These devices include
automatic feeders, smart waterers, self-cleaning litter boxes and air-conditioning smart pet houses.
Guo Weixue is the co-founder and CEO of a pet products company in Shanghai. According to
Guo, his company aims to make pet ownership easier and more efficient. It offers pet owners a one-
stop destination to access everything from pet tech solutions, pet food, pet care and medical services.
While pet owners are away from home, pets will be taken better care of with the help of its pet products
and services.
