seasonal events, and other factors.
Lucerne
Lucerne, Switzerland, is ideal for various winter activities, from skiing to relaxing by the fire. The city's snowy
streets, ice skating fields, and Christmas markets make it charming during the holidays. The Lilu Light Festival in

Big Sky, MT

terrain. The town is popular with outdoor enthusiasts for cross-country skiing, sleigh rides, an enchanted forest, and
snowcoach tours of Yellowstone National Park, just an hour's drive away. Though winter temperatures can be very
cold, Big Sky Resort's Mountain Village provides comfortable accommodation, dining options, and a spa.

Kelvin Ellis, a 9-year-old boy, was at a coffee shop in his home state of Louisiana when he spotted a
disheveled(衣冠不整的)man praying in the corner. Concerned about him, Kelvin went up to him with the only
money he had—a dollar bill he had just been given for his good grades—and offered it to the man.
The man in question turned out to be Matt Busbice, owner of sporting goods store Buckfeather. After being
awakened by a fire alarm in his apartment complex, but discovering that there was no fire, he decided to grab a coffee
to cool down. He then realized he had forgotten to pray that morning, so he stepped outside for a quick moment of
reflection. "And I started to slowly open my eyes, and there's a kid coming at me, about my height, "Busbice told the
media. The businessman got himself ready for a conflict. "And I go, ‘What?’” Busbice said.
"If you're homeless, here's a dollar," Kelvin replied. "I always wanted to help a homeless person, and I finally had
the opportunity." The boy's action deeply touched Busbice. After introducing himself and explaining the situation, he
bought Kelvin breakfast, promising to stay in touch.
Busbice later gave Kelvin a shopping tour at Buckfeather. However, what Kelvin initially expected to get out of
this interaction was something else. "Joy, because I helped someone," Kelvin said. "Give something away, and you
feel like you've got a lot of things from it."
To which Busbice added, "If you give, you're actually going to get more out of that. I couldn't grasp that as a kid.
And if we can spread that around, everything changes."
Kelvin shared that he initially thought Busbice was homeless due to his ashy knees, which Busbice explained
were caused by psoriasis(银屑病). In the end, they both gained a lifelong friend. To Busbice, the whole experience
made him feel richer than any other day in his life.
24. What did Kelvin do when he first saw Matt Busbice?
A. He offered him a cup of coffee.
B. He gave him a dollar out of kindness.

C. He was unsure of the boy's intention. D. He thought Kelvin was playing a trick.
26. What can we know about the outcome of the event?
A. It's surprising. B. It's uplifting.
C. It's disappointing. D. It's heart-warming.
27. What message does the story convey?
A. Every cloud has a silver lining. B. Actions speak louder than words.
C. A friend in need is a friend indeed. D. Giving is more blessed than receiving.

Charlie from Sydney, felt driven and motivated when he first launched his small business. However, it wasn't
long before he became bogged down, having a decline in motivation. That's the trouble with motivation. Fiona
Kumfor, a senior research fellow at the University of Sydney's Brain and Mind Centre, explains that motivation is
influenced by the brain's reward network, particularly the prefrontal cortex(前额叶皮层)and striatum(纹状体).
"The prefrontal cortex is responsible for higher-level thinking, like making decisions, reasoning and planning for
the future," says Dr. Kumfor. "The striatum is important in habitual processes or what we do without thinking." A
chemical called dopamine(多巴胺)is another important component of this reward network. It's released when we
do something that makes us feel good, from eating a tasty meal to going for a jog, and the prefrontal cortex and
striatum are very sensitive to it. "Dopamine is really important for reward and motivation," says Dr. Kumfor. "It's the
release of dopamine in the striatum and prefrontal cortex that ultimately determines our level of motivation and helps
us decide what we're going to do."
The trouble is that short-term decisions are more likely to yield a dopamine rush than things that take longer to
achieve, like losing weight or, in Charlie's case, operating a successful business. "When we're deciding whether to do
something, we're weighing up the costs versus the benefits," says Dr. Kumfor. "If you take something like eating
healthily, for example, the benefit might be that you lose some weight or you're less likely to have certain medical
conditions, but the cost is you're potentially not going to be able to eat chips, ice cream or other unhealthy food."
To enhance motivation, Kumfor suggests making rewards more immediate and breaking down larger goals into
smaller. Charlie found that rewarding himself for small accomplishments and turning these actions into habits were
key to boosting his motivation. By doing so, he reduced the reliance on his prefrontal cortex for constant cost-benefit
analyses and allowed the habit-forming striatum to take over, making positive behavioral changes more automatic.
28. What is the main idea of the text?
A. The challenges of maintaining motivation.
B. The operation of motivation and enhancing strategies.
C. The role of the prefrontal cortex and striatum in motivation.
D. The importance of dopamine in the brain's reward network.
29. What chemical makes us happy?
A. The dopamine. B. The striatum.
C. The motivation. D. The prefrontal cortex.
30. Why do people fail to achieve long-term goals?
A. Because they demand more dopamine. B. Because we prefer short-term decisions.
C. Because they often have higher costs. D. Because we like to eat unhealthy food.
31. How did Charlie solve his motivation problem?
A. Avoiding any form of reward.
