Fine Arts Students Deliver Magical Performances

As the winter holidays approach, Brookhaven School students presented an array of extraordinary

performances showcasing immense talent within our fine arts community. From the band concert to the

The December 12 Eagles Band Concert filled Woodruff Auditorium with melodies that captured the

festive spirit. On December 14, the Foundations Christmas Choral Concert featured spirited

Brady Theater with the Senior Chior Concert, spotlighting high school singers.

A highly anticipated tradition, the school-wide Holiday Assembly on December 19, hosted by

esteemed Fine Arts Department Chair Mr. Kaminer, embodied the true essence of the holiday season.

Angelic songs filled Young Gym, followed by joyous laughter and cheers as the “best costume” winners

received their awards. Even the youngest War Eagles, the children in the Brookhaven Early Learning

Center, attended the celebrations. Following the event, students merrily left school for the holiday break.

Looking toward 2024, anticipation builds for the Brookhaven theater spring productions.

“Something Rotten!” promises high-energy comedic performances by theater students, while “Tuck

Everlasting” assures a moving portrayal by talented Foundations students. Furthermore, the Brookhaven

Dance Company will hold their showcase April 11-12 in Woodruff Auditorium. Tickets will soon be

available for purchase.

When I was a child, I was terrified of storms, especially those violent ones that occurred in summer.

Once, I was out shopping with my parents, when suddenly there was a loud noise coming from the

direction of the Apennine Mountains.

As the storm got closer, lightning fell a few hundred meters from us, and hail (冰雹) whitened the

streets in minutes. This was a totally new experience for me, and I ran into my father’s arms in terror. I

was afraid. But I was also in awe. Like the pull of a horror movie, my fear developed into fascination as

I grew older. When a thunder storm broke out at night, I would rush to my window to witness a brilliant

show in the night sky. I would wait in eager anticipation, equipped with my parents’ camera, ready to

try and capture a flashing moment.

An interest in storm photography arose from these youthful attempts. What once frightened me

now gave me a strong rush, especially the first time lightning struck just a few meters away from me, an

experience which resulted in me capturing a splendid photo of the moment. From that moment on, I

realized that I absolutely had to chase storms throughout southern Italy.

The truth is that storm chasing is quite dangerous, especially to those who set out to chase storms

without acknowledging the risks involved or respecting nature. Most accidents caused by lightning

occur outdoors. You are most at risk in the mountains, but all large and exposed places such as a lawn

or a soccer field can also be a dangerous place during a storm, especially anywhere in the presence of

water, such as the sea, beaches or outdoor pools.

One day soon I will set off to expand my storm chasing journey beyond Italy’s horizons. I would

love to go to Venezuela where electrical storms are guaranteed almost all year round on the Catatumbo

River and Lake Maracaibo. Maybe that will be the day that my parents finally accept the choice of my

career.

What are pillows really stuffed with? Not physically, but symbolically? The question occurred to

me with the photos in the news and social media from the 50 cities around the world that staged public

celebrations for International Pillow Fight Day. Armed with nothing more than bring-our-own

sacrificial cushions, strangers struck heavily each other in playful feather from Amsterdam to Atlanta,

Warsaw to Washington DC. But why? Is there anything more to this delightful celebration?

As a cultural sign, the pillow is deceptively soft. Since at least the 16th Century, the humble pillow

has been given unexpected meanings. The Chinese playwright Tang Xianzu tells a famous story about a

wise man who meets a depressed young scholar at an inn and offers him a magic pillow filled with the

most vivid dreams of a seemingly more fulfilling life. When the young man awakens to discover that his

happy 50-year dream has in fact come and gone in the short space of an afternoon’s nap, our impression

of the pillow’s power shifts from wonder to terror.

Subsequent writers have likewise seized upon the pillow. When the 19th-Century English novelist

Charlotte Bronte poetically observed “a ruffled (不平的) mind makes a restless pillow”, she didn’t just

change the expected order of the adjectives and nouns, but instead she made unclear the boundaries

between mind and matter — the thing resting and the thing rested upon.

It’s a trick perhaps Bronte learned from the Renaissance philosopher Montaigne, who once insisted

that “ignorance is the softest pillow on which a man can rest his head”. On Montaigne’s thinking,

intelligence and happiness confront each other forever in a pillow fight that only one can win.

With the words of Tang. Bronte, and Montaigne, we can perhaps more easily measure the

attraction of the global pillow fight. Like a ritual of release, the annual international pillow fight

amounts to a kind of cleansing, a brushing off of daily worries: an emptying of the world’s collective

mind. Rather than a launch-pad for weightless rest, the pillow is a symbol of heavy thought: an anchor

that drags the world’s soul down — one that must be lightened.
