When the Winter Olympic Games come around every four years, there is one in particular that seems to
capture the hearts and minds of many: curling (冰壶).
What is it?
Curling is one of the oldest sports at the Winter Olympics. It has origins in16th century Scotland, where games
took place on frozen ponds or lakes. It is a sport that requires precise technique and strategy.
What are needed to play curling?
Each curler has their own brush and shoes specialized for the sport. One shoe grasps the ice, while the other is
slippery — called a slider — allowing players to slide with the curling stone.
When they’re playing it.
Curling stones are made from granite (花岗岩) and weigh almost 20 kilos.
The brush is used to sweep in front of the stone to warm its path, allowing it to travel further if desired. It can
also help the stone remain on course toward the target.
How do you score points?
At each side of the playing surface, there are a series of rings similar to a target — the house. Once an end is
completed, a team scores one point for each of its stones in or touching the house that are closer to the center than
