As she eyed the area from a distance, panic set in. Jobie picked up the pace, her heart pounding

louder the closer she got. When she reached the place she’d left them, her heart sank. “My lucky spikes

are gone!” she screamed. Jobie’s teammates helped her search the whole park, but there was no sign of

her lucky spikes. “So long, gold.” Jobie was hopeless, tears welling up in her eyes.

The next day, Jobie turned up in a new pair of spikes for the championships. Uneasily, Jobie

shuffled her feet. For her, the loss of her lucky spikes meant the loss of the gold medal. “Next up is the

girls’ 100-meter hurdles,” said the announcer. Jobie took several deep breaths, and her teammates

encouraged her as she walked down to the starting line. Feeling inspired, Jobie decided to try her best. In

a flash, Jobie was off and cleared hurdle after hurdle. She got closer and closer, and cheers broke out.

Wearing a wide smile, Jobie whispered, “No lucky spikes. Lucky me.”
