China’s first panda-themed tourist train, known as the “Panda train” left Chengdu Railway Station in
Sichuan’s provincial capital for Zunyi in neighboring Cuizhou province on Sunday night. The train is
decorated with giant panda images, and attendants carry panda toys and passengers can even try panda-
shaped food. The “panda train” will start operation on March 28. It will serve on fixed lines and customized
lines to connect tourist attractions in Sichuan and neighboring provinces.
In the future, the train will operate on a number of rail lines linking Chengdu and Chongqing,
Chongqing and Guiyang, Shanghai and Kunming in Sichuan, Guzhou provinces and Chongqing
municipality.
Ticket offer:
The three-day trip costs 1,280 yuan, including food, accommodation and entrance tickets to scenic spots
in Guizhou.
Facilities:
The train, which doubles as a mobile star-rated hotel, can accommodate 252 passengers. It has a dining
room, bar, karaoke room, dance hall and mahjong room. The 12 cars have individual rooms for two or four
passengers, and each room has a washroom with a toilet and shower facilities.
The mahjong room might be the biggest attraction for passengers from Sichuan, whose people are
known for their fondness of the game. There’s an old joke that an airplane passenger bound for Chengdu can
sleep soundly, only to be woken by the clicking of mahjong tiles in the city before landing. In fact, Chengdu
is better known for its love of mahjong than its other attractions, such as the giant panda, Sichuan Opera and
Sichuan cuisine, according to an online survey conducted by sohu.com two decades ago.
Booking information:
Tickets are only available in advance through Chengdu Railway International Business Travel Group
website during the trial runs.

Normally giving food to wild animals is not allowed, but the situation in Florida with over 1,000
manatees (海牛) dying from hunger leads officials to consider a plan to feed them. “We’ve never done such
a thing with any wildlife, but the situation has become such an emergency that it has to be considered,” said
Patrick Rose, the Executive Director of Save the Manatee Club. “This is a necessary but temporary measure.
But I believe the impact is lasting.”
The emerging plan would involve feeding manatees at a Florida Power & Light plant in Cape Canaveral
where manatees stay in cold winter months because of the warm water discharge there. It would be an
experiment involving greens delivered in a controlled manner such as by a conveyor belt. “People will not
be authorized to simply start throwing food. It’s illegal, and remains so.”
Manatees have long struggled to survive with humans, whose activities bring many harmful effects.
Hundreds of the slow-moving animals are struck by boats every year. The accidents have led to no-wake
manatee zones throughout Florida with violations (违反) punishable by significant fines. However, they are
just responsible for a small part of the loss of manatees. The hunger threat has led to a record of 1,017
manatee deaths as of Nov. 19, 2021.
This has been caused mainly by runoff from farms, urban areas and waste that promotes algal blooms
(藻华). Climate change worsening algal blooms is also a factor. And it’s not just manatees. People’s health
can also be affected by the blooms along with the health of a range of sea creatures. Besides, there’s an
economic loss for boat captains and sightseeing tour organizers.
“Actually, saving manatees is part of saving the ecosystem. If we take care, manatees will grow well. If
we don’t, they won’t,” Rose said. “We’re in the most critical position.” Manatees were listed as endangered
when the government started to protect them in 1967. Increased protections helped manatee numbers
increase from around 1,000 to 8,000 by 2017 enough to have their position to be downgraded from
“endangered” to “threatened”.
4. What can be learned about the plan to feed manatees?
A. It is a long-term strategy. B. It is carried out across Florida.
C. It is the first of its kind. D. It is aimed at saving the ecosystem.
5. What does the underlined word “they” refer to in paragraph 3?
A. Human activities. B. Boat accidents.
C. No-wake manatee zones. D. Significant fines.
6. Why does the author mention the figures in the last paragraph?
A. To prove manatees’ value in the ecosystem. B. To explain challenges faced by manatees.
C. To encourage people to feed manatees actively. D. To show the necessity of humans’ protections.
7. What is the text mainly about?
A. Wide-ranging effects of manatees’ deaths. B. A special feeding plan for Florida manatees.
C. Growing food shortage faced by manatees. D. Ecological crises caused by human activities.

With the invention of the Internet, humanity is now experiencing an adventure toward technological
advancement. Nowadays, technology assists us with everyday tasks such as driving, grocery shopping and
even dating. Technology is so closely connected to our lives that it’s easy to overlook one important
question: When technology really starts to control the world around us, what comes next?
Many experts and workers are scared that automation will take jobs from people who need them and
give those jobs to robots. I understand their concern. However, if robots are outperforming us at our jobs,
then what do humans have left to offer? We have the emotions and imagination that make us human. A
machine might work faster than a person, but that’s because humans built the machines that way. That, itself,
is an amazing accomplishment of the human imagination. We are talented, passionate creatures, who do not
deserve to be trapped in miserable jobs anymore!
By now, I hope you’re curious to hear which occupations we should focus on in the future. The obvious
answer is jobs in technology and robotics. Tech-related jobs will continue to be in big demand, and people
who work in these fields will continue to become more important. We should be grateful to them for doing
work to take us higher as a society. Besides, we should also focus on jobs in the arts and entertainment. It
may sound crazy, but what could better reflect the creativity of the human mind than the arts? I believe
technology has opened up our world, allowing us to share our imaginations with everyone!
So, we must ensure that future generations know that we mean it when we say, “follow your dreams.”
Welcome to the 21st century: what a time to be alive! There has never been a better time to be yourself, and
I can only see it getting even better from here.
8. Why does the author end paragraph 1 with a question?
A. To present a fact. B. To illustrate a problem.
C. To ask for approval. D. To arouse thinking.
9. What’s the author’s attitude towards technological advancement?
A. Favorable. B. Disapproving. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.
10. Why are art-related jobs also important?
A. They have opened up our world. B. They help people realize their dreams.
C. They will be in great demand in the future. D. They can show the innovation of human.
11. What is the tone of the passage?
A. Narrative and serious. B. Persuasive and positive.
C. Descriptive and critical. D. Informative and objective.

My first shopping in a general store was in Miss Bee’s when I spent the summer with my grandmother
in New York.
“Go get them yourself.” Miss Bee said, ignoring the shopping list held up before her nose. “I’m not
your servant, so just get yourself a basket from that pile over there and start filling.”
It took me three wall-to-wall searches before I found the first item on my list — a pork can be placed
between boxes of cereal and bread. Next up was toilet paper, found under the daily newspaper, and Band-
Aids, found next to the face cream. The store was a puzzle, but it held some surprises too. I found a new
Superman comic behind the peanut butter.
I visited Miss Bee a couple of times a week that summer. Sometimes she short-changed me. Other
