In the state of Georgia, US, where one in eight people face hunger, one farmer has made it his
duty not only to feed the hungry but also help them grow their own food. “My main goal is to make
sure that distant poor communities have access to locally grown food that’s free of chemicals, said
Bobby Wilson, who runs a nonprofit Metro Atlanta Urban Farm.
Wilson had worked with the University of Georgia for more than 20 years, bringing gardening
education and programs to communities throughout Atlanta. Through his work, he saw a great need
for fresh, healthy food in low-income urban communities.
When Wilson retired in 2009, he used part of his retirement savings to buy the farm and help fill
the gap. “I saw the need,” he said. "Plus, when you retire, you should do something you really enjoy. “
With the rising price of food, Wilson expects that people could save thousands yearly by growing
their own fruits and vegetables. He also points out the health benefits that fresh produce brings.
Millions of families in the US, mainly Black population, are struggling （挣扎 ）to feed their
family members, especially during the Covid-19 pandemics. That was what really inspired Wilson to
make his efforts. During the pandemic, Wilson helped to feed more than 25, 000 families who lived
nearby. He also helped struggling local farmers, who were struggling to stay alive. "When small and
disadvantaged farmers had no way to sell that produce because people were not coming out to buy,
we had an opportunity to help keep them alive” Wilson said. “We were buying food from them and
giving it away since they did not have shops to sell it. ”
"We're more than just a farm.” he said. "We're about fair treatment of people, because at the
end of the day, I want my grandchildren to have it better than what I have it today. ”

You've probably heard that “Laughter is the best medicine. " Comedy on Referral, a 6-week
comedy （喜剧 ）course, has taken that idea and run with it, using standup comedy to help treat
people struggling with mental （精神的）problems.
The idea came from comedian Angie Belcher's experiences teaching comedy at Bristol
University. She found that students often told her how much stronger and more relaxed they were
thanks to standup comedy.
Belcher will work alongside experts on mental illness and men who have thought of killing
themselves to use comedy as a form of treatment.
Belcher said, “Past terrible experiences are perfect for comedy. Comedy doesn't come from the
happy, perfect moments of your life, but from our everyday struggles and big life events. People who
have been through big life experiences such as losing a relative or close friend and ill health often
can't wait to tell me their story, mostly because there’s always something unusually funny about the
situation. ”
Research has shown that laughter has positive effects on mental health, such as decreasing
levels of stress and increasing levels of happiness. It can even have physical benefits, although less
research has been done in this area. Present research has linked laughter and humour with increased
ability to stand pain as well as short-term cardiovascular （心血管的）benefits. More research is
needed to support these findings.
In any case, the mental health benefits of regular laughter are widely accepted, and using
comedy to treat mental health struggles could be a really great achievement.
