I carried the flame in 1984 in the Torch Relay as it made its way across the country to
the Olympics in Los Angeles. I wasn’t an Olympic athlete. My dad did some voluntary
work for the Olympics that year, for which I was able to carry the flame. Still it makes me
realize that all sorts of honors can come our way unexpectedly.
On one May night, the flame had just begun its journey across America, covering
