You will think that Iceland’s most popular landscape is a natural one. Nestled in black
rock with milky waters and cloud forming steam, this pool is actually man-made and fed by
recycled mineral-rich water from a nearby power plant.
Deception Island, Antarctica
Few of us will make it to the world’s coldest continent, but if you do, make sure to dip
your toes into one of the natural hot springs. After soaking in the polar waters, you can dig into
the black sand and feel the heat creep up on you. The unofficial springs, which can reach
temperatures of over 158℉ are surrounded by glaciers, remains of a whaling station, and plenty
of penguins.
Thermae Bath Spa, Bath, UK
Soaking in the healing waters of Britain’s only natural hot springs is a pleasure that was
started by the Romans, who built temples, and bathhouses around them. At the Thermae Bath
Spa, you can get into four pools including an open-air one on the roof. Jane Austen, the city’s
most famous resident, also liked to “take the waters” in Bath.
Yangpachen Hot Springs, China
If you have altitude sickness then, unfortunately, you’ll miss the highest hot springs on the
planet. Yangpachen is famous for its activities at an altitude of 14,764ft above sea level.
Soaking in hot springs is physically exhausting work, so give yourself a break with foot
massages, barley wine, and a round of chess.

The Nobel prize in literature has been awarded to the novelist Abdulrazak Gurnah, for his
“uncompromising and sympathetic insight of the effects of colonialism (殖民主义) and the fate
of the refugee (难民) in the gulf between cultures and continents”.
Gurnah was born in 1948, growing up in Zanzibar. When Zanzibar went through a
revolution in 1964, citizens of Arab origin were treated cruelly and unfairly, which forced
Gurnah to flee the country at 18. He began to write at 21 in England. His first novel, Memory of
Departure, was published in 1987. He has been a professor at the University of Kent until his
