Homestay provides English language students with the opportunity to speak English outside
the classroom and the experience of being part of a British home.
What to Expect
The host will provide accommodation and meals. Rooms will be cleaned and bedcovers
changed at least once a week. You will be given the house key and the host is there to offer help
and advice as well as to take an interest in your physical and mental health.
Meal Plans Available
※ Continental Breakfast
※ Breakfast and Dinner
※ Breakfast, Packed Lunch and Dinner
It’s important to note that few English families still provide a traditional cooked breakfast.
Your accommodation includes Continental Breakfast which normally consists of fruit juice,
cereal(谷物类食品), bread and tea or coffee. Cheese, fruit and cold meat are not normally part of
a Continental Breakfast in England. Dinner usually consists of meat or fish with vegetables
followed by dessert, fruit and coffee.
Friends
If you wish to invite a friend over to visit, you must first ask your host’s permission. You
have no right to entertain friends in a family home as some families feel it is an invasion of their
privacy.
Self-catering Accommodation in Private Homes
Accommodation on a room-only basis includes a shared kitchen and bathroom facilities and
often a main living room. This kind of accommodation offers an independent lifestyle and is more
suitable for the long-stay student. However, it does not provide the same family atmosphere as an
ordinary homestay and may not benefit those who need to practise English at home quite as much.
1Which of the following will be provided by the host?
ARoom cleaning. BMedical care.
CPhysical training. DFree accommodation.
2What does Continental Breakfast include?
ACheese and cold meat. BFruit and coffee.
CFruit juice and bread. DDessert and tea.

Computer people talk a lot about the need for other people to become “computer-literate.” But not
all experts (专家) agree that this is a good idea.
One pioneer, in particular, who disagrees is David Tebbutt, the founder of Computertown UK.
Although many people see this as a successful attempt to bring people closer to the computer.
David does not see it that way. He says that Computertown UK was formed for just the opposite
reason, to bring computers to people and make them “people-literate.” David Tebbutt thinks
Computertowns are most successful when tied to a computer club but he insists there is an
important difference between the two. The clubs are for people who have some computer
knowledge already. This frightens away non-experts, who are happier going to Computertowns
where there are computers for them to experiment on, with experts to encourage them and answer
any questions they have. They are not told what to do, they find out.The computer experts have to
learn not to tell people about computers, but have to be able to answer all questions people ask.
People don’t have to learn computer terms(术语), but the experts have to explain in plain
language. The computers are becoming “people-literate.”
4Which of the following is David Tebbutt’s ideas on the relationship between people and
computers?
AComputer learning should be made easier.
BThere should be more computer clubs for experts.
CPeople should work harder to master computer use.
DComputers should be made cheaper so that people can afford them.
5We can infer from the text that “computer-lilerate” means_______.
Abeing able to afford a computer
Bbeing able to write computer programs
Cworking with the computer and finding out its value
Dunderstanding the computer and knowing how to use it
6The underlined word “it” in the second paragraph refers to the idea that Computertowns ___.
Ahelp to set up more computer clubs
Bbring people to learn to use computers
Cbring more experts to work together
Dhelp to sell computers to the public
7David Tebbutt started Computertown UK with the purpose of______.

I know what courage looks like. I saw it on a flight I took six years ago, and only now can I
speak of it without tears filling my eyes at the memory.
Our flight left the Orlando Airport one Friday morning. But immediately upon the take-off, it
was clear that something was wrong. The aircraft was bumping (颠簸) up and down. All the
experienced travellers, including me, looked around with knowing (会意的) smiles. If you fly
much, you see these things and learn to act calmly about them. However, we did not remain calm
for long.
Minutes after we were in the air, our plane began falling quickly. The pilot soon made a
serious announcement. “We are having some difficulties,” he said. “Our indicators show that the
control system has failed. We will be returning to the Orlando Airport. The flight attendants will
prepare you for a bumpy landing. Also, if you look out of the windows, you will see that we are
dumping (倾倒) fuel from the airplane. We want to have as little on board as possible in the event
of a rough touchdown.” In other words, we were about to crash. Many travellers looked visibly
frightened now. No one faces death without fear, I thought.
Then a couple of rows to my left, I heard a still calm voice, a woman’s voice, speaking in an
absolutely normal conversational tone. I had to find the source of this voice. All around, people
