Tons of AP classes. Beautiful buildings. A winning soccer team. What makes a high school
great is all the stuff you hear about ？Think again. Here are some absolutely vital ， but often
overlooked things that indicate a quality high school.
Adults and students high five each other in the halls.
Or at least smile and say hey.Are students comfortable to enter a teacher's office or classroom
during a break，just to check in？Do they trust the adults at the school enough to share their lives
outside of school？Indeed，strong，caring relationships with adults in a school setting increase
students' motivation and academic success.
No child is left without a plan.
Good high schools make sure there's a well-maintained and real-time updated system that
students and parents know how to use to check on their progress before report cards come out,
especially for students at risk of failing or dropping out. They give all students access to
demanding academics and meaningful career options throughout their high school years,plus extra
support for applying for college or pursuing a career.
Everyone's voice is being heard.
All of the students should be valued as individuals and as members of the community. Do
students get to participate in decisions that affect their learning？Do the adults and students at the
school feel that their personal identities are valued and respected?
When you ask a kid, why are you doing that? He has an answer.
At a quality high school, students should be able to say why they're spending their valuable
time programming a robot,testing the water at the local stream,or designing a museum exhibit. Of
course every single assignment will not get a clarity of purpose,but the more you hear a logical
response to why,the more it's likely that students are engaged in realistic ways of learning how to
solve complex,open-ended,real-world problems.
