An important person who has made a huge impact on my life is Savannah. Savannah is my twin sister and my
life would be completely different without her. Everyone always thinks it’s amazing to have a twin and it is but
it’s also not. People always beautify having a twin. They say it’s natural to be good friends, which is true, but
nobody ever talks about the negative side of it.
People also say things like “Who’s the smarter twin?” As twins, we are constantly getting compared. In the
second grade, she got admitted to a class for advanced students. In 6th grade she was put into advanced math. I
finally got put into advanced math for 8th grade but it still wasn’t enough because by then she was in a class that
was two years ahead and mine was just one. So people called me the dumb twin.
I played soccer from the ages 5-9. I quit when I was 9 because people decided Savannah was better and I
didn’t want to hear it anymore. She still plays. We also played softball together when we were 10-11. I quit that
too mainly for the same reason.
One day when I was in 7th grade, Savannah, our friends and I were at top golf for one of their birthdays. We
were almost done playing. My friend Allison said, “Savannah, how does it feel to be losing to the unathletic
twin?” Allison didn’t play any sports either, but since she wasn’t a twin, she wasn’t getting compared to anyone.
I could write a million stories about who’s the prettier twin? Who’s the uglier twin? Who’s the funnier twin?
It never really ends. Even though we get compared, I still love Savannah and she has made such a huge impact on
my life.
As I’ve gotten older, it has less of an effect on me when people compare us. I have realized that there is
always
going to be someone out there comparing us and there is nothing I can do about it. I am growing into my own
person.

If you live in San Diego, you’ve probably noticed some strangely coloured water on the beach lately. You
might wonder about red tide, but it’s actually an intentional job. Scientists at UC San Diego Scripps Institution of
Oceanography and University of Washington have been experimenting with dyeing (给……染色) the ocean at
San Diego beach pink. What could they possibly be up to?
This is being done for a study that examines how fresh water on the outlet of the sea is intermixing with the
ocean. The experiment is called Plumes in Nearshore Conditions (PiNC) . “I’m excited because this research
hasn’t been done before and it’s a really unique experiment,” said Sarah Giddings, a Scripps coastal
oceanographer leading the PiNC study. “The aim is to understand how fresh water interacts with ocean waves,
since it is usually warmer than ocean water and more floating.” The researchers are hoping that this pink dye
experiment will help them record more about how pollutants and sediments (沉积物) are distributed in the ocean
water through these additions of fresh water.
The fresh water is dyed pink so that the team can easily keep track of it when fresh water is added to the sea
water. The dye does not threaten the wildlife living there and is then spotted as it progresses in the water. It is
tracked by sensors on poles that are located along the sand as well as by drones (无人驾驶飞机) . There’s also a
device that tracks the light that is given off by the pink dye. The sensors record the height of the waves, ocean
currents and temperature.
Giddings explained, “We’re bringing together a lot of different people with different expertise. I think it’s
going to have some really great results and impacts. We will combine the results from this experiment with a
former field study and computer models to help us further understand how the dyed fresh water spreads.”
5. How does the author lead in the topic of the text?
A. By showing a strange phenomenon. B. By making an assumption.
C. By quoting a well-known saying. D. By making a comparison.
6. What is the purpose of Plumes in Nearshore Conditions?
A. To introduce the benefits of dyeing sea water pink.
B. To show how fresh water combines with sea water.
C. To prove that fresh water is warmer than sea water.
D. To examine the impact of fresh water on sea water.
7. Why is pink dye used by the team?
A. It can enormously give off light. B. It can function well with sensors.
C. It can be recognized easily and eco-friendly. D. It seems to attract wildlife and spread rapidly.
8. What will the researchers do according to Giddings’ words in the last paragraph?
A. Challenge the results with some experts. B. Build more scientific computer models.
C. Experiment with dyes of another colour. D. Integrate more results of former studies.

Located about 10 km northeast of the city center, the Chengdu Panda Base is a popular place to see lots of
pandas of different ages in what’s close to their natural habitat.
Highlights and Travel Tips
The Chengdu Panda Base is a nonprofit research and breeding ( 繁 殖 ) facility for giant pandas that was
originally founded in 1987 and opened to the public in 1993. The center began with a population of just six giant
pandas and has since grown to more than 100 pandas.
For visitors, it is more like a nice park than a traditional zoo. The base is large and nice to walk around, since
much of it is in a bamboo forest. There are also shops selling panda-related souvenirs, but the prices are usually
higher than markets or shops outside the base.
Accessibility Information
While the main road is flat, the base is large, so it is better for visitors with mobility issues to ride the shuttle
(往返 ) bus. Visitors who completely rely on wheelchairs may need help from others to guide. Most restrooms
within the base are wheelchair accessible.
Opening Hours and Ticket Prices
Opening hours 7:30 am - 6:00 pm
Entrance fee 55 CNY
Shuttle bus fee 10 CNY
Average time for this activity 2-3 hours
How to Get There
It takes about a half hour and costs around 30 CNY to get to the Chengdu Panda Base from the city center by
taxi. You can also get there by public bus or subway, although these routes require a few transfers.
9. What is special about the Chengdu Panda Base?
A. It offers tourists panda souvenirs. B. It is a zoo with the features of a park.
C. It is the largest panda research base. D. It has more pandas than anywhere else.
10. How much should a couple at least pay to visit the Chengdu Panda Base?
A. 110 CNY. B. 75 CNY. C. 55 CNY. D. 45 CNY.

As the West dries out and heats up, wildfires get bigger and more destructive, officials tasked with preventing
and battling the fires could soon have a new thing to add to their set of tools. The high tech help could come from
an area not normally associated with fighting wild fires: artificial intelligence(AI).
Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company, based in Jefferson County, has decades of experience of
managing satellites, exploring space and providing information for the US military. By generating more timely
information about on-the ground conditions and running computer programs to process huge amounts of
data,Lockheed Martin representatives say they can map the extent(范围)of a fire in minutes rather than the hours it
can take now They say the AI that the company has applied to military use can improve predictions about a fires
direction and speed.
“The situation that wildland firefighters work in is a dynamic environment with multiple activities and
responsibilities,”said Dan Lordan, senior manager at Lockheed Martin’s Artificial Intelligence Center. Lockheed
Martin aims to use its technology to reduce the time it takes to gather information and make decisions about
