Spring is just around the corner, but if you are tired of sunflowers, tulips ( 郁金香) and other
standard gardens, why not head to one of these mysterious and wonderful botanical gardens?
Butchart Gardens, British Columbia, Canada
One of the rarest flowers you'll find at Butchart Gardens is the Meconopsis, otherwise known as the
Tibetan blue poppy. The most impressive flowers can be found in the borders, where you'll find over one
million bedding plants. And although the gardens are famous for their perennials ( 多 年 生 植 物 ),
300,000 spring-flowering plants are grown every year, and over 900 varieties of plants are grown for
the summer gardens alone.
Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, Cape Town, South Africa
Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is one of a handful of botanic gardens to grow only native
plants. Some of the most popular varieties include the king protea, which produces enormous flowers
between autumn and summer, and the rare silver tree, a silky-leaved plant, which experts believe could
become extinct in the next 50 years.
Denver Botanic Gardens, Colorado, US
Once native to South Africa these oddly-named flowers are famously drought-hardy, making them
perfect for this part of North America. This garden is one of the few to focus on draught-tolerant plants
from Colorado and the grasslands of Africa, Mongolia and Argentina. In fact, Colorado is home to nine
species of endangered plant, and several can be found here.
Arctic-Alpine Botanic Garden Tromso, Norway
Visit the world's northernmost botanical garden and you'll find a breathtaking collection of plants
from the worlds polar and mountainous regions including, in the Himalaya section, the rare giant
Tibetan blue poppy, with its huge flowers and metre-high stem. You'll also see the Wilander buttercup,
which can only be found in the quite terrible areas of Svalbard's unforgiving icy islands.

I never wanted to go to kindergarten, or leave home at all. I spent my first five years within the
loving arms of my family, and when the time came for me to begin school at PS 116 in Brooklyn, I was
sure that no one would keep me safe. But I was so lucky to meet Mrs. Heyman. Not only did she make
me feel safe, she let me know that I was special.
Kindergarten was a fearful experience for me. I was a shy child who hated being separated from my
mommy. Mrs. Heyman was a kind and patient teacher who tried to get me to stop crying each morning
after I asked for one last kiss.
She would distract (转移··的注意力) me with pens and colorful paper and by playing beautiful music.
It seemed the feeling of being an artist distracted me from my separation unhappiness, allowing me to
attend class as the tears ran down my face. I also loved to sing and dance, and performed the Virginia
reel --- a kind of dance --- when the principal, Mr. Barton, visited our class.
Mr. Barton was an old, serious man who liked to walk behind children who behaved badly and
shout, “Behave!” I was afraid of being shouted at by him, and practiced the dance with my classmates
until Mrs. Heyman told us we were perfect.
Unluckily, I was so nervous before Mr. Barton's visit that I wet myself. Mrs. Heyman calmly took me
to the bathroom and told me to change into new clothes, drying my tears all the while, never showing
judgment.
As I performed, Mr. Barton cheered. Pleased, I bravely stepped up to the front of the classroom and
threw kisses in Mrs. Heyman's direction.
I was lucky to have her again for the first grade, and learned to love school and learning. She was
right about living my life without long-lasting attention from my mommy.
24. What was the author's life like before he went to kindergarten?
A. Busy. B. Happy. C. Lonely. D. Unsafe.
25. How did Mrs. Heyman draw the author's attention away from separation unhappiness?
A. By letting him do art. B. By giving him a kiss.
C. By dancing with him. D. By inviting his mother to school.
26. What can be learned about Mr. Barton?
A. He was always friendly. B. He was strict with the students.
C. He was interested in performing. D. He was full of praise for the author.
27. What happened before the author's performance?
A. He got himself in a mess. B. He received ill-treatment.
C. He failed to find his new clothes. D. He visited the bathroom many times.

One day about eight years ago in the departure lounge ( 休 息 室 ) of a flight from New York's
LaGuardia airport to O’Hare in Chicago, I found a young boy in tears and his mother at his side also
appeared upset, I walked to them and invited them to our VIP lounge.
As it turned out, the boy, Miles and his mom were returning to their home in Kansas City. Miles has
had some health problems. Though he had received more than thirty operations in a Jewish Hospital in
New York, he would be back for more.
Miles enjoyed spending his time in our VIP lounge looking at the entire wall filled with the pictures
of many celebrities who often came to our office. We soon added Miles' picture to the wall among those
celebrities.
Among the celebrities, Miles like the country singer Garth Brooks best. Miles would just sit and stare
at Garth's picture.
One day, Mr. Brooks was waiting in the lounge for his flight. As he looked at the collection of
photographs, Garth asked about the youngster with the big smile. We told him about Miles. We also told
him how much Miles loved and respected him. He nodded and left.
About six months later, Garth was going to be performing in Kansas City and he asked our workers
to help him get in touch with the family. He wanted Miles to be his guest. That evening, not only did
Miles sit in the front row, but he and Garth also had a private meeting after the performance.
Although Miles would receive many more treatments after that special evening, his smile greeted us
with every following visit. The face of a sick boy was changed by the joy of a stranger.
28. What does the author probably do?
A. A worker at an airport. B. A skilled photographer.
C. A country music singer. D. A doctor in a Jewish hospital.
29. What did Miles enjoy doing in the VIP lounge?
A. Drawing pictures. B. Admiring famous persons’ pictures.
C. Interviewing celebrities he saw there. D. Singing together with his favorite singer.
30. Which words can best describe Garth Brooks?
A. Kind and helpful. B. Proud and selfish.
C. Powerful and rich. D. Determined and generous.
31. What can be the best title for the text?
A. A Helpless Mother B. Kindness from Strangers
C. A Serious Health Problem D. Importance of Good Service

Language learning apps are very popular now and offer opportunities to learn vocabulary and
practice grammar. But there has been a discussion about just how effective such apps can be.
Among the most popular apps are Duolingo and Busuu. A former research found positive results on
the use of them. But it mainly concentrated on studies with learners who had signed up for language
courses and these apps worked as an after-class support, so the results were not always reliable. A
recent study of 4,095 Busuu users has been carried out to find out if users can actually learn a language
with an app.
Busuu provides learning materials for 12 different languages. It offers special models where some
contents are ready for use for free while some contents are not. We find that its users are an even mix of
men and women. More than half consider themselves to be at the beginner level because there is a
reduction in users as their language levels go up. Most people use the app because of personal interest,
or because they want to study or live abroad. Female users are likely to use it less often but for longer
periods of time than male users.
Feedback in the app is highly thought of. More than 92% of the users say that the app has met their
expectations and 86% consider the app as very good or good. In fact, more than 80% of the users
surveyed strongly agree that using the app has helped them improve their knowledge of the language
they are learning.
Besides, language learning apps also create an environment where mistakes are only known to the
users, and this can address the performance nervousness that many learners suffer from when asked to
speak a foreign language. So language teachers should encourage their students to use them to do the
grammar work, leaving precious class time for more language communication.
32. What's the reason why the results of the former research weren't always reliable?
A. It used out-of-date methods. B. It just focused on positive results.
C. It was only carried out before class. D. It only considered users of a limited kind.
33. What can we learn about the app Busuu from the text?
A. All the contents are free to use. B. Users use it for diverse purposes.
C. It's used by more advanced learners. D. It's more popular with female learners.
34. What does the underlined word “address” in the last paragraph mean?
