Luke Grenfell—Shaw had a rare form of cancer. It started as a pain in his shoulder and the
tumour spread to his lungs, making it stage four. The Oxford graduate was teaching English in
Siberia when he suffered a shoulder pain and saw the school nurse. It was her reaction to a lump
on his back that sent him back home to Bristol. “I was 24 years old. I had done an ultramarathon,”
Luke says. “48 hours later. I was back in hospital in the UK.” On 19 June, 2018, doctors told Luke
that he had cancer.
“I had kind of worked out that it was cancer, but what kind of blew me away was the fact that
it was stage four cancer,” says Luke. “That day, my life felt like it had disintegrated. My life had
been comfortable and conventional. I had worked hard and got rewards in terms of education,
jobs, things like that. That was all taken away.” On the day of his diagnosis, Luke had one clear
thought in his mind that he wanted to cycle around the world. It was something he had always
hoped to do, but the cancer news made him realize that he couldn’t put it off.
“I realized that the future had to become now,” Luke explains. He decided to cycle from
Bristol to Beijing—more than 5,000 miles—on a tandem bike, because he wanted to bring people
along to share the experience with him. Luke will not only be joined by family and friends for
certain legs of his trip, but also by other young people who are living with cancer. “This trip is
something I’m going to enjoy,” says Luke. “I’m going to be the richest and most fulfilling
experience that I can have.”
24What made Luke realize the potential threat of the illness?

CTo conquer the cancer in his own way.
DTo make his dream come true.
27What can we learn from the passage?
ALuke intended to change his future life by cycling.
BLuke planned to challenge the cancer with young men.
CLuke wanted to end his life during the cycling trip.
DLuke expected to challenge the tough journey.

Lee hyun-seok grew up in South Korea addicted to Japanese manga ( ) series such as
“Dragon Ball” and “Slam Dunk”. As soon as he could, he migrated to Tokyo to build a successful
career as a manga artist and editor. Then in the early 2000s came “webtoons”, a South Korean
cartoon innovation optimized for smartphones. Mr. Lee was at first unimpressed. Compared with
manga’s inventive graphic styles and profound plots, he found webtoons just the opposite.
Yet Japanese manga is being eclipsed by Korean webtoons. Last year the manga print market
shrank by 2.3% to ¥265bn ($1.9bn). The size of the global webtoons market was meanwhile
valued at $3.7bn. Manga is going digital slowly, in part because it is still designed for print, so
awkward to read on smartphones. Seeing which way the wind was blowing, Mr. Lee abandoned
manga for the webtoon industry in 2014.
Though webtoons such as “Itaewon Class” and “Solo Levelling” have become popular
among Japanese consumers, most Japanese publishers have stuck stubbornly to manga. “The
Japanese industry is very conservative,” sighs Mr. Lee. The manga industry’s business model, in
which stories are first published in weekly magazines and then in books, has hardly changed since
the 1960s. Webtoons have grown so fast, in part because they can be read more easily. Other
recent South Korean exports, such as the Netflix sensation “Squid Game” and BTS, a boy band,
have taken the world by storm thanks to the same combination of innovation and smart marketing
behind webtoons.
Some are concerned about the future. Japan’s manga fans are, like all its population, aging.
The average reader of the Weekly Shonen Magazine, a manga for children launched in 1989, is
now over 30. “Manga could end up as old people’s culture,” warns Mr Lee. “Children these days
are viewing through webtoons on their smartphones. Why not make something that suits their
taste?”
28What did Mr Lee think of “webtoons” in the early 2000s?
AHe considered it as inventive. BHe considered it as attractive.
CHe considered it as original. DHe considered it as shallow.
29What’s the meaning of the underlined word “eclipsed”?
ARuined. BOutweighed. CReplaced. DCopied.
30What can we learn from Japanese manga?
AJapanese manga can be read more easily.
BSince the 1960s, the manga has grown so fast.
CThe manga industry is unwilling to transform.
D.“Squid Game” was adopted from Japanese manga.
31What is Mr. Lee’s attitude towards manga’s future?
AWorried. BAggressive. CConfident. DAnnoyed.

The idea that the normal human body temperature is about 37℃ was first presented by the
German physician Carl Reinhold August Wunderlich in 1851. Since then, it’s become so widely
accepted that it serves as a touchstone for health—a diagnostic tool used by physicians and parents
as a basic indicator of whether someone is sick or well. However, it turns out that this well-
established fact isn’t, in fact, correct—or, to put it more accurately, human beings have been
getting cooler over the years.
Recent studies have shown that temperature records of groups of people have tended to run
low compared to the accepted norm ( ), so the Stanford team, led by Julie Par-sonnet,MD,
professor of medicine and of health research and policy, decided to do a more in-depth study to
compare modern measurements with historical records to try to identify body temperature trends
and, perhaps, uncover the reason why this cooling is happening.
For their research, the Stanford team looked at three distinct data sets from two historical
periods. After going through 677,423 temperature measurements, the team found that men born in
the 21st century had an average body temperature of 0.6℃ lower than that of those born in the
early 19th century while modern women showed an average decrease of 0.03℃ compared to those
born in the 1890s.
As to why this is happening, the researchers say that the most likely mechanism is a
reduction in the human metabolic rate ( 代谢率) due to environmental factors: One possibility is
that improvements in public health over 200 years have reduced the incidence of inflammations
(),which promote metabolism. This combined with people living more comfortable lives in
more stable environments means that the body doesn’t have to work as hard to stay warm, so the
average temperature falls.
”The environment that we’re living in has changed, including the temperature in our homes,
our contact with microorganisms () and the food that we have access to. All these things
mean that although we consider human beings as the same for all of human evolution, we’re not
the same. We’re actually changing physiologically,” Parsonnet said.
32. What is Carl Reinhold August Wunderlich’s achievement?
A. He set up standards for human health services.
B. He predicted trends in human body temperature.
C. He first used body temperature as a health indicator.
D. He proposed the standard human body temperature.
33. What can we learn about the Stanford team’s study?
A. It shows women have a lower body temperature than men.
B. It proves human body temperature has dropped at a faster rate.
C. It compared historical and current human body temperature data.
D. It suggested updating the definition of the average body temperature.
34. Which of the following is thought to cause the decrease in human body temperature?
A. The improved living conditions.
B. The contact with other creatures.
C. The decline in physically demanding work.
D. The adaptation of humans to climate change.
35. Which one could be the best title for the text?
A. What exactly is normal human body temperature?
