Searching the OED
How to use the quick search
The quick search bar can be found on the OED (Oxford English Dictionary) homepage and at the top of every entry page, and finds main dictionary entries, such as alphabet, break, xylophone. It also
finds phrases and compounds listed within main entries, such as to look up or alphabet book, and different forms of spellings such as dictionaries.
Wildcard searches
A wildcard is a symbol which stands for any character. The question mark?represents the occurrence of any one single character, and the asterisk * represents the occurrence of any number of characters
(or no character at all) . Wildcards are useful if you do not know how to spell a word, or if you want to find several terms beginning with the same root.
How to use the advanced search
An advanced search is a full search of the entire dictionary text which is for readers who have logged in or subscribed to the dictionary. Advanced search can be especially useful for very specific searches.
You can use the search area functionality to search by each section of an entry. You can also use filters to narrow your search to match certain criteria.
Browsing by categories
Categories allow you to explore the dictionary through groupings of words in, for instance, a subject or from a particular origin. If you want to find all the Carribbean borrowings in English, or find the
first word related to espionage to enter the dictionary, this is the function for you.
Further explore your search by using the options that appear on the right-hand side of the results page.
21What will you use if you are not sure of the spelling of a word?
AThe quick search. BWildcard searches.
CThe advanced search. DBrowsing by categories.
22What’s the requirement of using the advanced search?
ARegistering for the dictionary. BMatching certain criteria.
CSearching with specific words. DSearching with purpose.
23Where is this text probably taken from?
AA dictionary. BA brochure. CA website. DA textbook.

I am Ewald. I' m not someone who has many secrets, because I' m a terrible liar. But there is one huge secret that I kept for years-I failed my driving test. I had never failed a test before, and had never
even come close. Driving made me anxious, but my parents told me I had to. They signed me up for driving lessons. I had gotten a perfect score for my written permit exam, but getting behind the wheel was a
different story.
But when October 30th rolled around, my pride set in. I wanted to be like everyone else at my school, showing off the brand new license they'd gotten. Looking back on that special day, I can't remember
if I was nervous. What I do remember is starting the test, pausing at a stop sign after a few seconds, and being asked by the instructor to pull over. I had received an auto-fail since my pause was indeed a pause
and not a real stop. I wasn't upset that I was leaving without a license, but I was scared everyone would know that I had failed. So when I got to class, I told everyone I didn't want to take the test on my
birthday.
One Friday a month later, I went to the test spot again and passed. Later that night I drove for the first time by myself, which brought to me an amazing feeling I've never experienced-but sill, I couldn't
imagine ever telling anyone the truth. So I didn't. It wasn't until midway through college that I came clean. It turned out plenty of my college friends had failed too! And I gathered enough courage to speak the
fact out. Yes, I had also failed.
Now I realize failure and imperfection are two things everyone has to experience, without which one couldn't make a true man.
24What can we learn about Ewald?
AHe relied heavily on his parents.
BHe was a slow learner of driving.
CHe was afraid of taking exams.
DHe was bored with telling lies.
25Why did the instructor ask Ewald to pull over?
ATo give him a second chance.
BTo check his parking skills.
CTo put an end to his test.
DTo show him a better way of driving.
26What made Ewald feel extremely worried after his first attempt?
ALosing face before his classmates.
BMissing his birthday celebration.
CMaking his parents disappointed.
DFailing to get a driving license.
27What did Ewald learn from his own experience?
AHonesty is the best policy.
BTruth stands the test of time.
CFailure is a way to grow up.
DImperfection is another form of perfection.

For those of us who attempt to keep up with the fashion world to ensure our cupboards stay fresh, the real skeletons(骷髅) in our cupboards are those pieces we bought and only wore once or twice ---
mostly from following each season’s new trends.
With fast fashion brands like Forever 21, H&M and Zara’s constant output of new trendy clothing at low prices, it’s easy to fall into the trap of buying clothes regardless of whether you really need
them. But unnecessary purchasing, and the mass production of clothing, aren’t just hard on our wallets --- they are hard on the environment.
One of the first steps in getting unwanted clothes out of your cupboard is to sell or consign(寄送)them. But because popular resale shops like Buffalo Exchange and Crossroads don’t accept fast
fashion brands because they don’t profit enough from them, people often turn to throwing their old clothing in the dustbins.
Many consumers don’t realize that clothing and textiles(纺织品)are recyclable or how to recycle them. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the United States generated 16.22 million
tons of waste textiles in 2017 and recycled only 2.62 million tons. Ten and a half million tons of textiles were finally buried under the ground that year.
Vetements, a Parisian fashion brand worn by celebrities like Kanye West and Rihanna, aimed to bring awareness to the problem of fast fashion brands and clothing waste with a recent window display at
Saks Fifth Avenue in New York. The window contained a giant pile of clothes. The pile, which grew daily, was made up of old clothes donated by Saks employees and out-of-season items from the store.
On Aug.10, the clothing from the display was donated to RewearAble, a Long Island recycling program that collects old clothes and textiles, and prepares them for resale or repurposes the textiles.
28What keeps customers coming back to fast fashion brands like Forever 21, H&M and Zara?
AGood shopping environment.
BDiscounts and promotional activities.
CWarm and thoughtful service of the salesmen.
DLow prices and a continuous supply of new looks.
29The author mentions data in paragraph 4 in order to show that ________.
Amany consumers are aware of how to recycle textiles.
Bthe United States are capable of producing tons of fashionable textiles.
Cfast fashion is hard on the environment.
Dit is an effective way to deal with waste textiles by burying them under the ground.
30What can be learned about the window display created by Vetements?
AIt can help the environment.
BIt does good to people’s health.
CIt can help change people’s lives.
DIt will take the lead in the latest fashion.
31What is the best title for the text?
AHow to Stop Buying Unnecessary Clothes
BFast Fashion Brands Spread Around the World
