阅读下列短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

The parents of a troubled teen may feel unsure as to whom to turn to in order to find help
for their child. They may feel as if they have exhausted all of their options, and sometimes they
are on the verge of giving up. But there is hope. Schools for troubled teens offer discipline and in
some cases, drug treatment programs that can provide important life skills, and more
importantly, a fresh start.
Boarding Schools
When a child is unable to deal with the relative freedom of a standard school day, boarding
schools might be a good choice. At boarding schools, the child lives in a dorm setting, where
almost every minute of the day is scheduled by school administrators.
Treatment Centers
When a teenager has an addiction to drugs or alcohol, a residential center that specializes in
young people is an outstanding way to help them break the cycle of addiction. Treatment centers
feature individual and group counseling to help identify the root causes of the drug problem and
help develop the life skills needed to stay clean when the program is over.
Wilderness Programs
Designed to help improve the discipline and self-reliance of the children, wilderness
programs send kids back to nature. By placing them in a foreign and sometimes uncomfortable
setting, wilderness programs hope to improve children’s behavior. Programs generally include
hikes, exercise programs and team building exercises.
Boot Camps
Boot camps are the most extreme style of school for troubled teens. These facilities are
modeled after actual military boot camps, where the individual must get into shape, work as part
of a team, and follow a long, hard set of rules and regulations. However, boot camps might not
be the best choice for a teen with a drug addiction.
21.Which school will be a good choice if a teenager is addicted to drugs or alcohol?
A.Boarding Schools. B.Treatment Centers.
C.Wilderness Programs. D.Boot Camps.
22.What will teenagers do when they are sent to the Wilderness Programs?
A.They will live in a dorm setting.
B.They will develop the life skills needed to stay clean.
C.They will get into shape, work as part of a team, and follow rules and regulations.
D.They will go hiking and participate in exercise programs and team building exercises.
23.Who are most likely to be interested in this passage?
A.Parents. B.Teachers.
C.Students. D.Experts.

Arun Kumar Bajaj has a very unusual skill——he can paint with a sewing machine.
Technically, it’s embroidering(刺绣), not painting, but his artworks are so detailed that they can
pass paintings to the untrained eyes. And the fact that he does it all with a sewing machine just
makes it that much more impressive.
Arun was really good at drawing and painting while growing up and dreamed of becoming
a famous painter, but his father died suddenly 15 years ago, which destroyed his plans and forced
him to give up school in order to run the family business. His father was a tailor and he became
one too, but he didn’t let the artist in him die. He started “painting” with needle and thread, but
instead of using his hands, he decided on a rather unusual tool—-the sewing machine. It took
him a while to master this unique art form, but today he is recognized as the world’s only sewing
machine artist. His works become very popular both in India and abroad. It’s easy to see why,
just by looking at them, but what really makes his embroideries special is the tool he uses.
“You need to be very careful because once you’ve stitched the cloth, there’s no way you can
repair it, ” Arun said. “It’s all done in a single layer to give the painting a neat look. ”
Some of Arun’s most impressive works include a 4x2 feet painting of the court of Ranjit
Singh which took the artist over a year to finish. Arun runs a tailoring business in the Adalat
Bazar of Patiala, but he devotes a lot of his time to his artistic dream as well.
24.Why do Arun's paintings leave a deep impression on people?
A.They have rich content. B.They take many years to finish.
C.They give people a sense of satisfaction. D.They are finished with a sewing machine.
25.What made Arun give up his former dream?
A.His father’s sudden death. B.His father’s serious illness.
C.His love for sewing machines. D.Lack of managers in his family business.
26.What should Arun do when he paints?
A.Keep stitching the cloth without interruption.
B.Stitch the cloth again when making a mistake.
C.Be very careful to make sure paintings look neat.
D.Make sure the cloth he uses is very strong.
27.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Arun’s Wonderful Life Journey B.Arun’s Most Interesting Works
C.Constant Effort Needed to Succeed D.The World’s Only Sewing Machine Painter

A new smartwatch app alerts users who are deaf or hard of hearing of nearby sounds, such
as knocks at the door or fire alarms.
“The main motivation for the app came from my own experience, and conversations that
my colleagues and I have had with deaf and hard of hearing people over several years, ”says
Dhruv Jain, who presented the system, called SoundWatch.
Jain, who is hard of hearing, uses SoundWatch at home to avoid sleeping through a smoke
alarm. “On a nature walk, it’ll tell me that there’s birds singing, or there might be a waterfall
nearby, ” he says. “Those sounds make me feel more present and connected to the world. ”
Sound awareness apps for smartphones exist. But Jain prefers the immediacy of sound
notifications on his wrist, rather than in his pocket-and surveys of people who are deaf or hard of
hearing show he’s not alone.
The SoundWatch app pairs an Android smartwatch and phone. The watch records
surrounding noises and sends that data to the phone for processing. When the phone finds a
sound of interest, the smartwatch vibrates (振动)and displays a sign.
Jain, a computer scientist at the University of Washington in Seattle, and his colleagues
designed the app to identify 20 noises. In experiments, SoundWatch correctly identified those 20
sounds 81. 2 percent of the time. When set to listen only for urgent noises-a fire alarm, door
knock or alarm clock-the app was 97. 6 percent accurate. Eight deaf and hard of hearing people
who used SoundWatch around a university campus gave the app broadly favorable reviews, but
noted that the app misclassified some sounds in noisy outdoor settings.
Disability is highly personal, and Jain hopes his team can find ways for people to
personalize this app for their own specific needs. For example, people can be told about the
sounds they care about-a husband’s or wife’s voice versus general speech, the back door opening
versus the front door opening, and more.
28.What inspired Jain to invent the SoundWatch?
A.The desire to hear music. B.His deaf colleagues.
C.Sleeping through a smoke alarm. D.His own experience of being hard of
hearing.
29.What is the fifth paragraph mainly about?
A.How the Sound Watch works. B.Why Sound Watch is invented.
C.The influence of the noises. D.The link of smartwatches and phones.
30.Which sound type can the app identify the best?
A.Waterfall. B.Birds’ songs. C.A fire alarm. D.The sound of
forest.
31.In which part of a newspaper is the text most likely to be found?
A.Education. B.Advertisement. C.Technology. D.Entertainment.

Having friends may well keep you healthier and help you deal with stress better. Some
studies show that people with close friends have a greater ability to fight disease than people
who are alone.
Make friendship a priority(优先). Make full use of the time to be with friends even if it
means letting the lawn go unmoved or the dishes unwashed for a while. When you can’t get
together, use the phone to keep in touch.
Open up to close friends. Maintaining a deep friendship requires a level of “heartfelt”
intimacy(亲密).Don’t be afraid to express your inner fears and disappointments. Listen to your
friends when they have problems, but offer advice only when they wanted. Help raise friends’
self-esteem when they are shaken by a job loss, or other such events.
Have different friends for different activities, such as going to the movies, singing in a
choir, and joining in a bowling league.
Don’t wait for a friend to ask a favor. When a friend has a fever, go to the store or ask
teachers for help
Never take a friendship for granted. Like a good family, friendship needs care and patience.
Become a joiner. Find a group that matches your interests.
Talk to strangers. Conversations started in museums, dining rooms,or bookstores can lead
to firm friendship.
Join a club or two. It is an ideal place to meet others with similar interests.
