Last week my youngest son and I visited my father at his new home in Tucson Arizona. My
earliest memories of my father are of a tall, handsome, successful man devoted to his work and
family, but uncomfortable with his children. As a child I loved him, as a schoolgirl and young adult
I feared him and felt bitter about him. He seemed
unhappy with me unless I got straight A's and unhappy with my boyfriends if their fathers were
not as“successful”as he was. Whenever I went out with him on weekends, I used to struggle to think
up things to say, feeling on guard.
On the first day of my visit, we went out with one of my father's friends for lunch at an outdoor
café. We walked along that afternoon, did some shopping, ate on the street table, and laughed over
my son's funny facial expressions. Gone were my father's critical(挑剔的) air and strict rules Who
was this person I knew as my father, who seemed so friendly and interesting to be around? What
had held him back before?
The next day, my dad pulled out his childhood pictures and told me quite a few stories about
his own childhood. Although our times together became easier over the years, never felt closer to
him at that moment. After so many years, I’m at last seeing another side of my father. And in doing
so, I'm delighted with my new friend My dad, in his new home in Arizona, is back to me from
where he was.

A. He seemed unhappy with her.
B. He became gentle and friendly.
C. He was still strict and critical.

When it comes to medical care, many patients and doctors believe“more is better”. But what
they do not realize is that over-treatment-too many scans too many blood tests too many
procedures(步骤)-may bring harm.
Terrence Power, for example, complained that after his wife learned she had Wegener's
disease, they found it difficult to refuse testing suggested by her doctor. The doctor insisted on
office visits every three weeks, even when she was feeling well. He frequently ordered blood tests
and X-rays, and repeatedly referred her to specialists for even minor complaints(疾病). Even when
tests came back negative, more were ordered and she was hospitalized as prevention when she
developed a cold She had as many as 25doctor visits during one six-month period. The couple was
spending about $30, 000 a year for her care.
After several years of physical suffering and near financial ruin from the medical costs, the
couple began questioning the treatment after discussing with other patients in online support groups.
“It's a really hard thing to determine when they've crossed the line, ” Mr. Power said. “You think
she's getting the best care in the world, but after a while you start to wonder: What is the purpose?
”Mr. Power then spoke with his own main care doctor who advised him to find a new specialist to
oversee(监视) Mrs. Power's care Under the new doctor's care, the regular testing stopped and Mrs.
Power's condition became stable.
Now she sees the doctor only four or five times a year.
8. What do many patients and doctors believe?
A. Less is better.
B. More is better.
C. More may not be better.
9. How often did the doctor ask Mrs Power to visit him?
A. Every week.
B. Every two weeks.
C. Every three weeks
10. What does “hospitalized” in the second paragraph mean?
A. Be sent to a hospital.
B. Be sent to home
C. Be sent to a church.
11. When did the couple begin questioning the treatment?
A. After knowing about other patients treatment.
B. After having many doctor visits during one six-month period.
C. After discussing with other patients in online support groups.

Reading can be a social activity. Think of the people who belong to book groups. They choose
books to read and then meet to discuss them. Now the website Book Crossing. com turns the page
on the traditional idea of a book group. Members go on the site and register the books they own and
would like to share. BookCrossing provides an identification number to stick inside the book. Then
the person leaves it in a public place, hoping that the book will have an adventure traveling far and
wide with each new reader who finds it. Bruce Pederson, the managing director of Book Crossing,
says, “The two things that change your life are the people you meet and books you read Book
Crossing combines both. ”
Members leave books on park benches and buses, in train stations and coffee shops. Whoever
finds their book will go to the site and record where they found it.
People who find a book can also leave a journal entry describing what they thought of it. E-
mails are then sent to the Book Crossers to keep them updated about where their books have been
found. Bruce Peterson says the idea is for people not to be selfish by keeping a book to gather dust
on a shelf at home.
Book Crossing is part of a trend among people who want to get back to the“real”and not the
virtual(虚拟). The site now has more than one million members in more than one hundred thirty-
five countries.
12. How do people of book groups often read?
A. They sell books to read and then meet to discuss them.
B. They choose books to read and then meet to discuss them.
C. They exchange books to read and then meet to discuss them.
13. How do Book Crossing members read?
A. Go on the site-register the books-leave it in a public place
B. Register the books-go on the site-leave it in a public place
C. Leave it in a public place-go on the site-register the books.
14. What are the two things that change people's life?
A. The people you miss and books you read
B The people you meet and books you own.
C. The people you meet and books you read.
